According to the chief, shots were fired and someone was injured. Rios responded to the scene and hired the suspect. Shots were exchanged and Rios was shot dead, Acevedo said.
Injured, Rios ran to a nearby motel for help but collapsed in the lobby. “Unfortunately, he was declared deceased at the scene,” the chief said.
He was a 25-year veteran in the department, according to Acevedo.
Rios leaves behind four children aged 9 to 17, along with his parents and brother, as well as two cousins who are also HPD officers, the chief said.
Acevedo said investigators located one vehicle involved in the shooting and have a description of a second in connection with the incident. The suspect is believed to be an adult male in his 30s and his late 30s who Acevedo described as “heavily tattooed”.
At the press conference, the chief spoke directly to the suspect and implored him to surrender to avoid further bloodshed.
“We’re going to capture you. So do you a favor and surrender because we’re going to capture you,” Acevedo said. “We have leads and we’re going to catch you. And the best thing you can do if you know that person is surrender or call the police, so we don’t have any more blood.”
