Notre Dame defensive back Houston Griffith is expected to return to South Bend and play for the Fighting Irish again next season, according to sources from Irish Illustrated. This was first reported by Bryan Driskell of Irish Breakdown.

On January 4, Irish Illustrated announced that Griffith was entering the transfer portal and leaving South Bend. The 5-11 and 205 pounds officially put his name on the list within 48 hours. However, Griffith is expected to remove his name from the portal shortly. At 10:45 am ET, Griffith is now officially out of the transfer portal.

Irish Illustrated also reported last week that Griffith was expected to return due to the fact that there was a new high school defensive coaching staff at Notre Dame. Defensive coordinator Clark lea has since become Head Coach at Vanderbilt and Safety Coach Terry joseph left to coach defensive backs in Texas.

According to sources, conversations went very well between Notre Dame and Griffith went smoothly. We are told the head coach Brian kelly has done a tremendous job recruiting him personally and clearly showing how important Griffith is to next year’s squad. That, mixed with efforts to recruit the new Defensive Coordinator Marcus Freeman, greatly helped the Irish.

The 5-11 and 205 pounds arrived at Notre Dame as part of the 2018 class. Bradenton (Florida) IMG Academy star, from the Chicago area, chose the Fighting Irish over scholarship offers of Florida, Alabama, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, and many more across the country. The Under Armor All-American was highly praised coming out of high school and ranked among the top 100 prospects in the 247Sports composite rankings. He was the # 11 cornerback of this cycle. 247Sports gave him a slightly lower rating as a No. 148 rookie in 2018. He recorded 28 tackles, two tackles for a loss and one sack as a senior at IMG.

As a true freshman at Notre Dame, Griffith played 11 games and even started the game against Wake Forest. He totaled 14 tackles and two break-ups that year. He played 13 games the following year, while recording five tackles and one pass break. In 2020 Griffith was in 12 games played, which he started, totaling 14 tackles and one tackle for a loss.
