The presidential race for the 2020 democratic elections is being held in Texas for the third televised debate of the party's first campaign.
Houston will host the Democratic debate on September 12 and 13, sponsored by ABC News and the Spanish-language network Univision.
After the publication of this article on Tuesday, ABC News and the Democratic National Committee officially announced the debate in Houston.
"Houston, the most diverse city in the country, is the perfect venue for the Democratic Party's third debate," party chairman Tom Perez said in a statement Tuesday night.
Like Miami, which hosted the first Democrats debate in June, Houston was among the the last group of cities planned to host the Democratic Convention next year. (Milwaukee eventually won the award.) Texas's choice could also be seen as a statement of the party's intention to be competitive in a state that has not been won by a Democratic presidential candidate since 1976.
The last time the Democrats held a presidential primary debate in Texas, it was in February 2008, when Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton met in Austin at an event sponsored by CNN and Univision.
The third debate, which will prejudge ABC's usual programming in the evening, should include a more condensed version of the current vast democratic domain. In total, 20 candidates appeared during the two parties in Miami last month and 20 more are expected for the second Democrat debate in Detroit in July, which will also be divided into two nights to accommodate the number of candidates.
However, Democratic officials have reinforced the demands of the debate on the ABC, raising the threshold that candidates must meet for national electoral performance and the number of unique donors for their campaigns.
The scores attributed to the first democratic debate in Miami, organized by NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo, exceeded industry expectations. The June 28 event – which resulted in a clash between Senator Kamala Harris of California and former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. – was seen live by about 18 million people. Americans a record for a Democratic primary debate and the sign of intense intense engagement with the 2020 race.
On July 30 and 31, CNN will be hosting the Detroit Debate, which will be hosted by two of the Network's top political correspondents, Dana Bash and Jake Tapper, as well as former prime time presenter Don Lemon.
CNN will broadcast a live draw on July 18, in prime time, to determine which of the qualified candidates will appear on which night.
ABC News, for its part, has become a competitive player in the early coverage of the 2020 presidential race.
"The View," a talk show on ABC for women, has become a mandatory stop for aspiring Democrats. Beto O'Rourke, the former Texas congressman, was An Elector from Iowa asked when he would appear on the show and Biden headed to his Manhattan studio for his first TV interview after announcing his candidacy.
In total, 11 candidates chose ABC News programs to announce their candidacy or to grant their first interview on the television news. The list includes Mrs. Harris, who declared her in the morning show of the channel, "Good Morning America."
