Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner responds to Texas Thanksgiving weekend curfew orders

HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner issued a statement following curfews in Bexar County and San Antonio.

“I’m not excluding anything,” reads his statement to the media. “Our behavior, the spread of this virus and its impact on the healthcare system will ultimately dictate our response.”

His comments come after Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff and San Antonio Nirenberg Mayor imposed a curfew, starting from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday, November 26 and continuing through Monday, 30 November. The efforts are due to fears that Thanksgiving weekend will end with a huge spike in COVID-19 cases, KSAT reported.

People are not allowed to assemble outside their homes during an enforced curfew, except when seeking services from a business. Restaurants, including those with outdoor service areas, must close for food services at 10 p.m. until the curfew ends. Establishments can continue to offer drive-thru, curfew, or take-out after 10 p.m. and resume food service at 6 a.m. during the curfew period. The amended public health order strongly encourages home catering service providers to only offer take-out or take-out until the curfew expires on Monday. Individuals or establishments that violate the curfew rules can face a fine of up to $ 1,000.
