At least three people, including the suspected gunman, died and two others were injured in a shooting at a Houston motel on Sunday night, police said.

Police said the shooting took place at the Palace Inn around 11 p.m. The two people killed in the shooting had been shot by the suspect before the police arrived at the scene, they added.

Authorities responded to the motel after receiving a call from someone suspected of being the shooter, who indicated he had weapons and could potentially shoot others, including police, said Houston Police Chief Matt Slinkard at a Monday morning press conference.

When police arrived, the suspect – who was on a second-story balcony – shot them even before they got out of their patrol car, police said. No officer was injured in the exchange of gunfire. It was also unclear whether the suspect, described as an African-American male in his thirties, had been fatally shot by police officers or had self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Response officers later found two people dead, a Hispanic man and a woman. They were found dead on the balcony. Two other people were injured in the parking lot after the suspect fired at random on the balcony, he added.

“It’s a horrible and tragic scene,” Slinkard said. He added that the two deceased could have been murdered by this suspect “about two to three minutes after the arrival of the initial call”.

An investigation is underway into the shooting.
