The Houston Texans could turn to a familiar face to fill their most publicized opening.
While they are still more than a month away from leading the search to fill their head coaching position, sources say a strong possibility is to look to Romeo Crennel as a full-time coach. It is currently being debated within the organization.
Crennel – now the interim coach – is a longtime respected, affable defensive coordinator who has been a head coach in the past. For the Texans, he could serve as a provisional coach, allowing the team to arrive at 2021 with some stability and pushing their true coach search into the next offseason when COVID-19 restrictions would allow for traditional search in no one.
No one knows what the country will look like in January, but flying across the country and interviewing multiple candidates can be difficult, even on private planes. Coaching candidates may be interviewed on Zoom. That means a team could invest $ 30 or $ 40 million in a head coach they’ve never met.
For Houston, emerging from a tumultuous but successful tenure under Bill O’Brien, letting Crennel hold him for a year is an intriguing option moving forward. He’s also someone the players love and respect.
Crennel, 73, was head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2005 to 2008 and had the same role with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012. He has been in Houston since 2014 in various leadership roles.
In this scenario, VP of Football Operations Jack Easterby would continue to lead football during the transition and could continue in that role if the team does not hire a GM. At least that puts Easterby at the helm for several years until things are sorted out.
