HOUSTON – In the early hours of July 27, Houston Texans goalie Jonathan Owens watched his girlfriend, Simone Biles, compete in the Olympics.
But after jumping into the gymnastics team final and walking away to talk to his coach, Owens said he felt a stomach ache knowing what Biles was going through. Biles withdrew from the event, later claiming she needed to focus on her sanity after experiencing the “twisties” during the competition.
“I was sick for her, just because I can see her face, I kind of know her facial expressions, I can kind of read her lips and kind of know what was going on and what she was saying. to his coach, ”Owens said Thursday. “I kind of already knew what was going on ahead of time, so I was really hoping that she would get over it and be able to come out and perform. So I had a stomach ache because she didn’t. couldn’t get out there. “
Owens, who said it was the longest separation of the two since they started dating, said he’s just trying to “be that extra voice” for Biles and help him stay positive. .
“She was a bit of a funk when everything wasn’t going well,” Owens said. “When you’re used to everything going well for so long, and all of a sudden you have a problem with your performance, you put yourself down a bit, you lose confidence in yourself. And that was in some way. sort of one of the things I was trying to make sure … keep her positive.
“It was hard for me to really understand what she was going through because I’m not on that stage and I face these pressures and things, but I’m just trying to be as understanding as possible.”
Biles retired from the all-around and individual finals on vault, floor and uneven bars, but capped her Olympics by winning bronze on beam. Biles has now won seven Olympic medals, which equates to Shannon Miller for the most Olympic medals by an American gymnast.
“I was so proud of her,” Owens said. “Just so she could mentally get over what was going on. She kind of tweaked her beam routine, but I was just happy for her.”
