This week, many Americans are wondering how to modify Thanksgiving celebrations in order to stay safe during the Covid-19 pandemic, including Bill Gates. The Microsoft co-founder shared his Thanksgiving plans in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday.
“We will have fewer family members there than we normally would,” said Gates, who was at his home in Washington during the pandemic with his wife Melinda and their three children: Jennifer, 24; Rory, 21; and Phoebe, 18.
Gates said he set up “a video connection with many family members on Thanksgiving Day, but [will] not being with them to have the turkey together, “he said. This year, “now is not the time when enough people will be able to enjoy Thanksgiving the way they want,” Gates said.
The Centers for Disease Control advised Americans not to travel during the holidays, during a briefing Thursday, and stressed that even medium-sized gatherings with people outside your home could increase infections. Covid-19 cases in the United States are over 12.25 million, with the seven-day national average of daily new cases reaching 170,855 on Sunday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Gates also stressed the importance of wearing masks while on vacation, and cited projections that increased wearing of masks could save more than 50,000 lives. Face masks prevent the spread of respiratory droplets from an infected person and provide some degree of protection to the wearer.
Dr Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease specialist and a longtime friend of Gates, said he is not spending Thanksgiving with his adult children, who live in different parts of the country, in an effort to prevent the spread.
Fauci said families should analyze the risks and benefits of the gathering before making a decision.
“You don’t want to cancel everything, but you at least want to give yourself and your family the benefit of having considered what the risk / benefit is of doing this…” Fauci told NBC News. Press “Sunday.” You just have to think about it and make your own decision. ”
