The Detroit Red Wings set up a dynasty that was about to win five Stanley Cups in 13 years. Thanks to incredible writing, timely exchanges and the contract magic of their general manager, they had created a team capable of participating in 25 consecutive series without ever having to take time to rebuild.
And then it changed.
The guys they relied on to excel in their late 30s and early 40s started to retire. Their replacements have begun to retire. The free agents Detroit brought to fill the void began to sign elsewhere. The second-tier guys Detroit signed in their place did not produce. And the contracts that were awarded to them were added and prevented a youth movement from spreading its wings. The front office did not manage to realize a disappearance already in progress and rather believed that if we kept the sequence and if we did the series, everything could happen.
But finally, in 2017, they missed the playoffs and started doing it dramatically. There is finally hope with an old face for a new general manager, but Holland has put the team in tune to ensure his recovery is not quick.
