ATHENS – Kirby Smart had plenty of boxes to tick in his search for a new defensive-back coach in what could prove to be the most pivotal location of the offseason.
Jahmile Addae, like Smart a former safety and honor roll student for all conferences, appears to have all the attributes the Georgia head coach could be looking for to fill the position.

Addae was an All-Big East artist with several double-digit tackle games
Addae is considered to be a great communicator, and he comes to the Bulldogs from a West Virginia defensive system that operates with much of the same mindset intelligent, defensive coordinator Dan Lanning teaches in Georgia.
The wording is a little different, but the feeling is the same.
“On defense, we call it an-11, which means every guy in the 11, do your job,” Addae said in an interview predicting the Mountaineers 24-21 Liberty Bowl victory over the Army.
“We ask them to do this on and off the field, and these things, we would like to reflect on, correspond and translate.”
Smart is in the midst of a massive rebuild in Georgia football high school with nine scholars having left the Bulldogs’ defensive backfield since the end of the 2019 season, including four transfers.
Safety Lewis Cine is the only full-time 2020 season starter to return, although safety Christoper Smith started the second half of the season alongside him after Richard LeCounte was sidelined by injuries sustained in an off-road motorcycle accident on Halloween night.
The fact that Addae has done it on the pitch at the highest level as a player gives him immediate credibility with Smart and the players.
Indeed, it was Addae delivering a yank and fumble over former UGA tailback Darry Ware in the 2006 Sugar Bowl, helping to protect a 14-0 lead in West Virginia after the Bulldogs headed by DJ Shockley drove in the red zone. .

Addae also gets a glimpse of the NFL through her brother, 8-year veteran San Diego Chargers, Jahleel Addae.
But it’s Jahmile Addae’s ability to teach and develop players that many believe separates him as he is able to communicate concisely with players.

Summarizing how to play the army option, Addae spoke eloquently as he discussed the necessary state of mind.
“It all depends on the passive aggressiveness of it all,” he said. “I think you play passively until you can diagnose where the ball is, and that’s where the aggressive piece comes in, and it’s time to play.
“Seeing the right things and reacting aggressively once it’s been diagnosed.”
No team did better against the pass than West Virginia last season.
The Mountaineers led the country in passing yards allowed (159.6) and ranked 24th across the country in defense of passing efficiency in 2020. Georgia, meanwhile, was 88th in yards per authorized passes and 56th for the defense of passing efficiency.
Addae will need to help the Bulldogs land transfers and top rookies quickly, as former UGA starting cornerbacks Eric Stokes, DJ Daniel and Tyson Campbell all head to the NFL.
During his two years as a coach under Butch Jones in Cincinnati, Addae was recognized as one of the Big East Conference’s Top 10 Scouts.
