In the last moments of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere, Meredith collapsed after dealing with the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) all day. The surgeon general was suddenly transported to a peaceful beach. Then a familiar voice called her name from afar.
“Meredith,” Derek exclaimed from across the beach. He smiled, waving his arms at his wife, who – just like the viewers at home – was shocked.
As expected, the episode ended on the spot. However, the trailer for Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 3 confirmed that Meredith and Derek’s beach moment will continue. In the preview, Meredith told her husband she misses him. Then Derek replied, “I know.

After the surprising reunion of Derek and Meredith Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, The LA Times published an interview with showrunner Krista Vernoff. She confirmed that McDreamy would be back not once, but three more times.
“We will see more than [Derek] this season. It wasn’t just a cameo, ”Vernoff said. “He will appear three more times.”
Meanwhile, during an interview with News Center Maine, Dempsey opened up about how Derek is going to relate to Meredith’s story going forward. He revealed that his character will “come back” by visiting Meredith when she needs it most.
“I keep coming back, visiting and talking to him at critical times throughout the season,” Dempsey said.

It’s clear Dempsey won’t be coming back Grey’s Anatomy for a long time, but it looks like Meredith and Derek’s reunion brought joy to everyone involved, from the fans to the team behind the series. In an interview with Deadline, Vernoff revealed that the writers just wanted to include a fun escape for viewers. Then Pompeo amplified the idea.
“It all started with: how to give people a certain escape. I had this imagination of a beach motif throughout the season, ”Vernoff said. “I called Ellen, and I said, and if we brought, I don’t know, a dead character that you could dream of on the beach, that would be so much fun for the fans. And she said, let’s go get Patrick.
As it turns out, Pompeo and Dempsey recently reconnected and discussed the possibility of Derek returning on a hike in Malibu. Pompeo told Deadline that both sides were happy to “help people and make them smile.” They also “had a ball” to film together again on Grey’s Anatomy.

“It was awesome,” Pompeo said. “Patrick and I have this chemistry, where I think, even since we first met, for some reason, we just feel like we’ve known each other for a hundred years. And it’s just the same feeling. It’s like riding a bike, we just have a chemistry and a dynamic that has always served us well, and I think we have a genuine affection for each other.
She continued, “It was very healing to come back. And know that we are doing something right, posting a positive story, a healing story, that will make people smile.
Dempsey also shared his thoughts on reprising his role. “It was really fun, very special. It was really comfortable, incredibly secure, ”he says.
Then, when the actor was asked if he would do more episodes, Dempsey didn’t exactly say no. He said:
Yeah, that was fun, because I really like the message on the dynamics of this story. With everything we’re dealing with right now, and certainly, we’ve been distracted by the election, but we’re going to come back to the reality of COVID, be in a pandemic, and all the lives that have been lost. Where are these souls going? And I think that’s what attracted me to this scenario. I think it can be really helpful and calming for so many people.
