Karl Lagerfeld's cat, Choupette, is expected to inherit a fortune estimated at $ 195 million by Chanel's creator.

Chanel confirmed Tuesday that Lagerfeld, creative director of the fashion house since 1983, had died at the age of 85 following a brief illness.

According to the French magazine "Le Figaro", Lagerfeld said in an earlier conversation that Choupette was an "heiress".

"If something happens to me, the person who will take care of it will not be in misery," he said in an interview in 2015.

Choupette is renowned for its sumptuous lifestyle. Lagerfeld describes it as a "full-time job" and hires housekeepers who are dedicated to taking care of it. It has 235,000 Instagram subscribers and more than 50,000 followers on Twitter.

Any inheritance that Choupette receives from Lagerfeld's estate will add to her own fortune, with Lagerfeld revealing that her feline companion has earned more than $ 3 million through modeling jobs.

According to the amount bequeathed to Choupette, she could be about to set a new record for the world's richest cat. The disc is currently owned by a cat named Blackie, who inherited 7 million pounds ($ 9.15 million) from his British owner in 1988.

A Chanel spokesperson was not immediately available to comment when contacted by CNBC.
