How Ohio State football changed its defensive coach setup against Tulsa

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State football defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has moved up from his usual place on the sidelines into the press box for today’s game against Tulsa.

Secondary coach Matt Barnes, who was in the box for the first two games, stepped onto the field. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson and linebacker coach Al Washington are the other defensive coaches on the field.

It is not yet clear who will call the defense today. Ohio State continued to line up with a single-top free safety in their defensive formations during warm-ups.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day said during the week that every change is being considered in defense, from schedule to coaching assignments to staff.

As late as Thursday afternoon, he refused to commit to Coombs as a defensive caller against Tulsa. He said a change is likely to come regarding which coaches were in the press box and which were on the pitch.

Oregon’s 35-28 victory gave Ohio State their first regular-season loss since 2018. It also continued what Day called “a pattern” of poor defensive performance that dated back to last season. The Ducks averaged 7.1 yards per carry, and Ohio State only managed one tackle for loss and no sacks.

Among other notable pre-game changes, first-year cornerback Ryan Watts worked with Channel 2 in free safety.
