It may have seemed like a fairy tale in 1981 when a future king married a beautiful woman in a storybook wedding watched by millions of people. However, the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana was far from perfect.
The lack of attention from Diana’s husband led her to take drastic measures, including throwing herself down the stairs when she was pregnant with Prince William. Here’s how Queen Elizabeth II reacted to the incident.
Princess Diana did not have a very good relationship with Queen Elizabeth
Several reports over the years claim that the Queen believed Diana knew what to expect as a royal and therefore the role would not be a burden on her. However, it soon became clear that she was wrong. And while the monarch was sympathetic towards his daughter-in-law at times, their relationship became very strained in 1992 after the publication of Andrew Morton’s book. Diana: her real story.
Diana has denied being involved in its creation or being the source of the material it contains. But members of the royal household, including the Queen, still suspected that it was her and did not trust the princess.
It wasn’t until after Diana’s death in 1997 that Morton revealed that she was actually the source of the information in the book.

How the Queen reacted when Diana threw herself down the stairs
Diana recorded a series of audio tapes for Morton in which she detailed her misfortune in her marriage and in the royal family. She even spoke candidly of a desperate attempt to get her husband’s attention when she was four months pregnant with their first child.
“I had told Charles that I felt so hopeless and that I was crying. He said I was crying wolf. “I’m not going to listen,” he said. “You always do this to me. I will ride now. So I threw myself down the stairs, ”Diana said. She then revealed that her stepmother’s reaction to what she had done was an “absolute horror”.
“The queen comes out, absolutely horrified, trembling – she was so scared,” recalls the princess.
Diana added that what she did was another cry for help and after her fall she had bruises around her stomach, but she “knew I wasn’t going to lose the baby.

In these secret recordings for Morton, Diana also described what Queen Elizabeth told her when she told her Charles had cheated with Camilla Parker Bowles.
“So I went to the best lady, sobbing, and I said ‘what should I do. I come to you, what should I do? And she said, “I don’t know what you should do. Charles is hopeless, ”Diana recalls. “And that was it, and it was help.
The Queen was, however, very upset when her son and Camilla’s affair became public knowledge as she did not tolerate adultery. The Daily Mail noted that in the book, Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Challenge of Prince Charles, biographer Tom Bower wrote that the monarch was so angry at the time that she described Camilla as a “wicked woman.”
