Drew Esocoff directed prime-time NFL games for 22 seasons, including 16 seasons with “Sunday Night Football”. He’s seen more NFL football than 99% of the planet, but Sunday’s game at Gillette Stadium will be unlike any regular season game Esocoff did.
We’ll let him give you an example.
“Normally I would never, ever have contacted NFL security before a normal game,” Esocoff said in an interview this week. “But they’ll be at my security meeting at 6 p.m. Sunday to make sure we have a Super Bowl-type barricade for my hand-held camera guys.” Because once this game ends and all the rules are in place, it’s going to be chaos. We do this to make sure my pocket guys can get an amazing view of any handshake or something like that. It’s like what we do at a Super Bowl. Luckily we also have SkyCam, which is a camera that’s not going to be (jostled) or touched or anything like that.
The possible handshake he’s referring to is anticipated between Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and Patriots coach Bill Belichick. You may have heard that Brady returns this Sunday to play his former coach and former team. The production managers at NBC Sports are slightly excited to bring this to you. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET with a special on-site edition of “Football Night in America” from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., Followed by the kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC, Peacock and Universo.
“This game transcends sports,” said Fred Gaudelli, producer of “Sunday Night Football.
