About the short film:
The Short Film Showcase features exceptional videos created by filmmakers from the Web and selected by National Geographic publishers. We are looking for work that confirms National Geographic's belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The filmmakers created the content presented and the opinions expressed are theirs, not those of National Geographic Partners.

One of the most densely populated countries of Africa, Uganda has seen its population double in 12 years. With 95% of the population dependent on toxic charcoal and firewood for cooking, natural forests have declined to only 10% of their initial coverage. Sustainable plantation forestry could offer a solution. Planting trees are cut to serve as utility poles, which provide electricity to homes and limit the need for firewood. The income generated by this process allows families to educate their children.

Filmmakers James Thomson and Thomas Hogben present Ugandans who are opening a new path with this innovative approach.
