How the Mandalorian does tattoo correctly

Tatooine is more than just a generic desert planet. But not all Star wars history lets that go.

Star wars has a complex relationship with world building, for a franchise that is so invested in it. He often throws between planets, creating only rough sketches, giving the impression of some globally relatively generic worlds – a desert planet, an ice planet, a salt planet, another desert planet. But The Mandalorian is often a clear exception, using its television format to paint deeper stories and more complex pictures of the places the Mando visits. That’s what this video essay, by captain midnight, explore, looking specifically the first episode of this second season to delve deeper into how the series characterizes Tatooine in a deep and interesting way that dovetails with everything that came before.

It’s a fantastic little essay, exploring how much of what might just happen as fan service works here because it is set in a deeper context, creating a sense of real history for Tatooine that gives character to the planet. Tatooine is one of the most-visited places in the series, but it might be easy enough to explore in its more superficial aspects: sand, Tusken Raiders, weird alien bars. Instead, The Mandalorian here adds information and makes choices that affirm and complicate the story we have with the planet without being too lenient. Plus, the krayt dragon is really cool. It is difficult to dispute this.
