And just like that, Marvel’s great multiversal war began. The season finale of Loki dropped the sacred timeline with one stab and opened the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the terrifying concept of … free will? It’s the endgame embraced by The One Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) – the timeline guardian despot that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) face in the End Times Citadel, which we love to imagine. is just down the street from Restaurant du Bout de l’UUnivers. Maybe we’ll visit this hotspot soon: Disney + topped “For All Time. Always” with the big reveal that Loki is the first Marvel series to score a season 2.
For most of his execution, the Season 1 finale played out as a one-man monologue, as Majors explains to his usurpers exactly who he is, how he came to be, and the consequences of their action – or inaction – will have on the MCU in the future. It has already been revealed that the actor will play Kang the Conqueror in Phase 4, but the version we meet here could be Immortus, the so-called “Gardener of Time”. It would certainly match his obsession with “pruning” the wandering branches of the temporal flow.
Here’s the short version of his backstory: In his own part of the timeline, Kang / Immortus was a 31st century scientist who discovers that other universes, with other variations, are stacked on his. These variations got along very well initially, but inevitably sparked a feud that escalated into a full-fledged multiversal war.
Our Kang / Immortus finally got the upper hand by siphoning off the powers of Alioth – a being who cannot be bound by such simple concepts as time and space. To keep the forces of Multiversal Chaos at bay, he then set out to build the Time Variance Authority and recruited unintentional variants – including our friends Ravonna, Mobius, and Hunter B-15 – to function as his police force. Kang then presents Loki and Sylvie with a choice: show him the exit and take his place in the Citadel or kill him and let go of the dogs of war.
Naturally, the avenger Sylvie chooses this last option. Defeating Loki in a one-on-one fight and sending him through a door back to the TVA, the crook and enchantress then ram their blade into the chest of One Who Remains. Moments later, she gazes through the windows of the Citadel as the sacred timeline grows branch after branch. As for Loki, he is entitled to a Planet of the Apes-cliffhanger ending – the Tim Burton version, not Chuck Heston’s – as he discovers he’s in an alternate version of TVA HQ: the one that exists in the shadow of the impending Kang statue.
Needless to say, Twitter struggled to catch its breath after the shattering implications of the season finale.
So where do we go from here? Granted, all of these branching timelines point in one direction: the next Marvel animated series, What if…?, which releases on August 11 and features variations such as T’Challa Star Lord, Captain Carter and Iron Killmonger – all of which are voiced by their traditional live-action counterparts, including Chadwick Boseman’s final performance as king of Wakanda.
The multiversal fallout will also be felt in December Spider-Man: No Path Home, as Alfred Molina has already confirmed his return as Doc Ock of the original Sam Raimi trilogy, while rumors of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s participation continue to circulate as well. And speaking of Raimi, the future director Doctor strange the sequel – which opens in March – puts the multiverse in its crazy title!
Meanwhile, there is little mystery about the cryptic “I’ll see you soon” farewell that The One Who Remains said to Sylvie moments after she stabbed him. Majors is currently filming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania where he will officially assume the role of the conquering variant of Kang. Released in theaters on February 17, 2023, the film wraps up Peyton Reed’s pint-sized adventure trilogy, though Kang is sure to play a giant role in the future.
As to where on the Phase 4 Season 2 timeline of Loki could fall, that remains to be seen. Nor the Emmy nominees WandaVision or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier get a sophomore year, while Marvel’s upcoming Disney + list focuses on first-year shows like Hawk Eye – who has a strong Black Widow link – Ms. Marvel, She Hulk and Moon knight, all of which are in various stages of production or post-production.
But the Loki The creative team, including director Kate Herron and writer Michael Waldron, have yet to announce their own return to work date or if they even return at all. (Waldron has a second job on a top-secret Star Wars project overseen by big Marvel boss Kevin Feige.)
