Zoom brings its live transcription feature to free users. Paid users had access to the service for a while, but free users will soon also be have the ability to add closed automated systems powered by AIsubtitling to their meetings.
Live transcription rolls out across all accounts this fall, but you can request early access via this request form. Multilingual Zoom hosts, please note: At launch, tit only recognizes english.
We’re not sure how long it will take for Early Access to be granted, but here’s how to activate Zoom’s live transcript once it’s available to you.:
- Connect to the Zoom on the site.
- To go at Settings> Meeting.
- Activate “Subtitles.” To note: If you see the feature but can’t turn it on, you might need to ask for permission from the Zoom group or the account administrator. You can find more information on the Zoom support page.
- Light up “Activate the live transcription service to display the transcript on the side panel during the meeting.”
How to activate Live Transcript in a meeting you host
- Make sure live transcription is turned on by following the steps above
- Open Zoom and start a new meeting or join one.
- Click on “Subtitles” or “Live transcription” from the call controls.
- To select “Activate automatic transcription”
Once Live Transcript is activated, continue your call as usual. The app will handle all the subtitles for you.

The app will automatically recognize the speech and type it on the screen, but there is a risk that there will be some errors. According to Zoom’s support page, a live ttranscriptionthe precision of may be affected by:
- Background noise
- Volume and clarity of the speaker’s voice
- English language proficiency of the speaker
- Lexicons and dialects specific to a geography or a community
If live transcription does not work, Zoom recommends typing Manual captions for your Zoom meeting or breakout room in real time.
Google Meet also works as a contingency plan if Zoom’s auto-generating captions aren’t available to you. Meets automatic captions are easy to activate and recognize English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. If all else fails, you can use third-party tools like Description or even a paid transcription service to add captions to a previously recorded meeting.
