Now that you have the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer, Moderna or Johson & Johnson, how do you prove it?

Well, you can take your vaccination card with you just in case you need it to travel or enter a meeting place, job, or in-person event. Or you can take a few minutes and add a secure digital vaccine certificate, or passport, to Apple Wallet on your iPhone. We will show you how.

If it’s in Wallet on your iPhone, it’s always with you and you don’t have to worry about it falling apart over time. The paper map can be a backup.

A service called VaxYes from the San Mateo, Calif., “Digital health company” GoGetDoc promises to make the process quick and easy. It’s free until August 31, 2021, so hurry.

It is not the only digital vaccination passport service, but it is easy to use. There is no universal digital vaccination certificate in the United States, and so far only one state offers government-issued digital proof of vaccination. This is the New York Excelsior Pass.

How to add a free VaxYes vaccination passport to Wallet

You can follow the VaxYes process on your computer or iPhone. It’s simpler on iPhone, as it won’t require you to take the extra step of adding it to iPhone (although it’s about as easy as clicking on text).

  1. Use a browser on your iPhone to go to gogetvax.com/vaxyes (search for VaxYes or just enter the URL).
  2. Click on blue Get a free vaccine passport button.
  3. When prompted, enter your mobile phone number and activate button next to “Can this phone accept SMS” so that you can receive SMS from VaxYes.
  4. Use your iPhone’s camera to take photos your completed COVID-19 vaccination card and ID card (or you can use your computer’s camera or webcam if you do this from your computer). VaxYes will download them.
  5. When you get the verification text, follow the link and click Add to portfolio.
  6. That’s it. Now your vaccination certificate stating that you received the vaccine (s) will go wherever your iPhone goes.

VaxYes says it uses AES 256-bit encryption to ensure your personal information is secure in a HIPAA-compliant environment.
