How to back up your Google photos

[ad_1]

Now that automatic syncing between Google Photos and Google Drive is disappearing, how can you be sure your photos and videos are backed up safely?

It's actually quite simple. Your photos can be saved to Google Photos via their mobile app or using Google's backup and sync app for both Windows and macOS systems.

Some notes first. If you decide to remove the Photos application from your Android phone, the backup and sync features are not automatically disabled. You want to disable it. before you get rid of the application. (This is not the case with iPhones.)

If you upload your photos in what Google calls "High Quality" (in other words, using Google's compression), they will not be counted in your storage quota. However, if you download them without compression (in what Google calls "quality of origin"), they will do it. If you download large photos, you may run out of storage very quickly. If this happens and you do not want to buy additional space, it's a good idea to disable the app.

Save photos from a phone

If you use an Android phone, it is almost certain that you already have the Google Photos app.

  • If it is not, download it from the Play Store or the App Store and open the app.
  • Tap on the three-line menu icon and select "Settings."
  • Tap "Save and sync."
  • Make sure the "Save and Synchronize" toggle is set to "On". You can also set a number of other features here; for example, if the videos will also be saved, if the backup can also be done using your cellular data or simply via Wi-Fi, and if there are other folders (in addition to your device's folder) photo) on your device must also be backed up.

Back up photos from a Windows or macOS system

If you upload photos from a camera to your computer, you can also save them to Google Photos with the help of a separate application.

  • Go to the Google page for its "Backup and Sync" application. Download, install and start the application.
  • Click on "Get Started" and sign in to your Google Account.
  • Choose whether you simply want to save photos and videos, or other files. Click on "Next".
  • At this point, you can select the folders in which you want to save your photos. You can also choose whether you want your photos recorded in "High Quality" or "Original Quality".
  • If you click "Advanced Settings" at the bottom of the page, you can choose to sync files from your computer to your Google Drive. (This is different from the automatic sync that, until recently, occurred with Photos because it is voluntary via this app and may include other files than photos.)
  • Click on "Start". Your photos will start to save. When the application is complete, you can go to Google Photos on the Web and find them.

You will see a new icon in the top toolbar. If you click on the icon, it will tell you which files were recently downloaded and which ones were skipped, either because they were already in Google Photos, or because they were too large (75 MB or 100 Mpx for photos, 10 GB for videos) or also. small (less than 256 x 256).

One thing to keep in mind: if it's about important photos for you, for business or personal reasons, you may consider using a full backup program (which will save your data on a separate drive) or a service (which will save your data in the cloud), as they can provide additional tools and more diverse recovery options.
