Apple offers two different generations of Apple Pencil, compatible with different iPads. Since both are battery powered, they will inevitably run out of juice. Here’s how to charge and check the battery percentage of your Apple Pencil.
How to charge the first generation Apple Pencil
Charging the first-generation Apple Pencil isn’t the most elegant thing. The first generation Apple Pencil is compatible with all iPads that come with a physical home button and Lightning port.
If you need help identifying which Apple Pencil you own, know that the first-gen accessory is completely circular.
It is paired and loaded in the same way. Take your Apple Pencil and remove the cap from the top of the stylus. You will now see a light connector at the end of Apple Pencil.
Insert this connector into the Lightning port at the bottom of your iPad. You will hear a ding and Apple Pencil will begin to charge.
Keep Apple Pencil plugged in; a full charge occurs in about 15 to 30 minutes. We will tell you how to see the battery percentage of an Apple Pencil at the end of the article.
If you don’t like charging your Apple Pencil using your iPad (and that’s a pretty tricky affair), you can use the Lightning adapter that came with your Apple Pencil.
Connect your Apple Pencil to the adapter, then connect the adapter to a Lightning cable to charge your pen.
How to charge a second generation Apple pencil
Apple has improved the charging experience with the second generation pencil by leaps and bounds. The second generation Apple Pencil is supported by the new iPad Pro and iPad Air. These iPads have flat edges and don’t have physical home buttons.
The second-generation Apple Pencil magnetically snaps onto the side of the iPad, as it has a single, flat edge (with a programmable button). And that’s all you need to do to pair and charge your Apple Pencil.
Place your Apple Pencil on your iPad (in landscape mode) and you will see a banner telling you that the accessory is charging. You will also see the battery percentage.
Since this is the way to store and transport your pencil with your iPad, your Apple Pencil will hardly ever go without a charge.
If that happens, connecting it to the iPad will give you the required charge in just a few minutes. You will also receive a notification when the battery of your Apple Pencil is low.
How to see the battery percentage of your Apple Pencil
When you use a pencil with your iPad, Apple automatically adds a Batteries widget to the Today View screen. You can slide your finger from left to right on the Home screen of your iPad to view “Today”. Here, slide your finger up to find the “Batteries” widget.

If you can’t find the Batteries widget, you can add the widget in just a few seconds. Press and hold an empty part of your home screen to enter Jiggle mode.

Here, tap the “+” button at the top left corner of the screen.
In the contextual menu of widgets, choose the option “Batteries”.
You will see the widget in three sizes. Use the size small or large if you want to see the battery percentage, then hit the “Add Widget” button.
The widget will be added at the end of the Today view. You can move it anywhere you want on this screen. Swipe up from the home bar to save the widget layout.
Now you can see the battery percentage of your Apple Pencil anytime, whether it’s charging or not.
