The Lunar New Year Event in Pokémon Go celebrates the start of the Year of the Ox.

Among the celebrations you will find the Lunar New Year Research Quest, which, if completed, will allow you to catch a Tauros. This is great news for all Pokémon Go players who live outside of this regional exclusive Pokémon’s home.

Field research tasks and everything you need to know about the Lunar New Year event in Pokémon Go

During the Lunar New Year event in Pokémon Go, you will be able to collect a number of special Field Research tasks by spinning PokéStops. While these tasks can only be collected during the event, they can be completed once it ends.

Below are the field research tasks for the Lunar New Year event:

  • Send 3 gifts to friends reward – meeting with Meowth
  • Send 10 gifts to friends reward – meets Alolan Meowth or Galarian Meowth
  • Catch 6 Water-type Pokémon reward – meet Miltank
  • Catch 12 Pokémon reward – Meditative meeting

You can catch all three Meowth Forms by completing the Lunar New Year Field Research tasks.

The Lunar Event also sees Mega Gyarados added to the Mega Evolutions roster, so if you collect all of the Mega Pokémon, don’t forget to add it to your collection.

Another big advantage is that the trading range will be temporarily increased throughout the 40km event. This will change on Monday February 15th, so you will have more than enough time to complete some transactions.

The chances of becoming lucky friends with someone have also been increased throughout the event, making this a great time to trade Pokémon.

The 5km egg pool has also been changed for the event, giving you the ability to catch the following Pokémon:

  • Rattata
  • Ekans
  • Mankey
  • Ponyta
  • Mareep
  • Houndour
  • Miltank
  • Torchic
  • Car
  • Buneary
  • Tepig
  • Litleo
Ponyta, Houndour, and Tepig are among the Pokémon that can hatch from 5 km eggs collected during the Lunar New Year event.

Finally, in keeping with the Lunar New Year theme, a number of red Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild, including Krabby, Goldeen, Magikarp, and Tepig.


Celebration season has arrived! It comes with an increase in the level cap – including the addition of XL Candy, the Legacy 40 Challenge quest and improvements to some XP sources – Platinum Medals, the arrival of Generation 6 Pokémon such as Espurr and the changes to the Go Battle League saw the addition of “weird” red eggs and new Arlo, Cliff, Sierra and Giovanni line-ups.
