How to fix the controller disconnection bug on your Xbox Series X / S

Microsoft is finally fixing the annoying controller disconnect bug that has plagued the Xbox Series X / S since launch, and tThe patch is included in March 2021 firmware update rolled out this week. Microsoft does not directly mention bug fixes in his announcement message, but Xbox director of program management Jason Ronald confirmed via Twitter that the patch “also fixes a lot of player-reported controller disconnects.”

If you are one of the many gamers facing this issue, be sure to install the March 2021 firmware update immediately. To manually update your Xbox Series X / S:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to bring up the guide menu.
  2. Go to Profile and System> Settings> System> Updates.
  3. To select “Console update available” to download the new version. If it says “No console update available,” then your Xbox already has the latest firmware available.

If you prefer your Xbox to automatically download future updates as soon as they’re ready, turn on “Keep my console up to date” and the Updates menu. This will allow you to benefit from all the new features – and important bug fixes – as soon as possible.

While fixing the disconnect bug is an important part of the Xbox Series X / S March firmware patch, it’s worth installing the update even if you’ve been spared from controller connection issues. Several new features are also included, such as the new Auto HDR and FPS Boost modes which add free visual enhancements for certain backward compatible Xbox games.
