SPOIL ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched the first and last season of "How to Get Rid of Murder," titled "Say Goodbye."

Annalizes Keating (Viola Davis), a lawyer and professor, has been involved, to varying degrees, in other deaths, for five seasons under the title "How to Get Rid of Murder". But this time, it came for her.

The first episode of the sixth and final season of the ABC-Shondaland drama ended with a lightning signature that revealed Annalise's funeral. The scene, which will be explained as the following episodes unfold in the usual structure of the series, bringing answers to the mid-season at the end of the calendar year, was sort of an end from the book at the beginning of the episode, in which Annalize was in rehab and her therapist had told her that she had to choose to live or die. For the showrunner Pete Nowalk, however, this decision was clear for a while.

"I arrived in the season with the great idea of finishing the show, which is a clue at the premiere of the season. I wanted to give everyone, especially Annalize, an end that seemed great. For me the mystery of this first, who is Who killed Annalize? It was something I wanted to do forever, but obviously you can only do it last season, "says Nowalk. Variety.

Although Nowalk acknowledges that some members of the public might be "really sorry to see Annalize, this person I may have been looking for, is dead," he said. Anger is an important emotion for the last season. He adds, "It's something really useful to maybe take away in your own life. It's going to be uncomfortable. "

The fifth season of "How To Get Away With Murder" ended on a cliffhanger while Annalize stood in the street screaming after the disappearance of Laurel (Karla Souza). Laurel's young son was also removed from a cradle while Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) were watching him. When the sixth season came back, the question of what happened to Laurel was still topical – as were questions about Michaela's parents (Aja Naomi King), including the fact that Annalize knew her father and why Annalise chose Connor to be part of his wife. group at all.

While Nowalk says that he intends to answer as many outstanding issues throughout the season, the initial goal at the beginning of the series' final series was to to give Annalize a rehab, especially by opening her up to the death of her husband. and to be honest with herself about the negative feelings that she has about who she is.

"It should change it and I think it will change it," says Nowalk about his rehabilitation experience.

Although she only stayed there for one week, she showed a slightly modified behavior from the start by bringing some of the therapeutic techniques that she learned to her infamous Keating Five. But Nowalk notes that it will not be an easy navigation for her in the last part of the episodes.

"She had very clear advice," he says. "It's the lifejacket rule, you put it yourself first, then you try to save someone else." But I do not know if Annalize believes that. So, I think when she left the rehab, I feel really bad, she scares me, and I think what we see at the end of the first episode lets you know, "That's the good decision? Should she just run away from these people? "She's doing something really heroic: staying with the date she came to this evening for murder because she's not going to give up – she does not believe in the race – but she's going to go throughout the season.

At what point do the characters trust Annalize – and the others – this past season will be playing in the story in a way that bends a bit to previous seasons, notes Nowalk. "They will all choose their wedding rings. I do not have to keep them all together. This is the case for each dynamic of the series – each couple of characters – people will choose their alliance as you would on "Big Brother" or "Survivor", then will cross their fingers hoping that it works. I think we'll all show our true colors and that's what we're going to do to these characters. "

While Nowalk deliberately kept the secret about Annalize's death up to now, he said he was not worried about the tragedy of the event if it was murdered, if she relapsed and overdosed. Instead, he focused on making sure he was "true to the character" and not thinking about "the moral of the story, but to which seems inevitable.

Davis has already said Variety that before finishing the story of Annalize, she hopes to see growth and redemption for the woman she has devoted to portraiture for six years. Nowalk shares the fact that the redemption discussion will be expanded beyond Annalize to include all members of its orbit during this past season.

"As we come to the end of the disaster and all ends on this horrible final conclusion – which will be final and horrible – they must be wondering who they want to be, can they live with for sure?" coming out with that guilt will reach them? It's an existential element of the episodes: what kind of person am I? Would I prefer to be in jail but be honest with myself and with the world? it's more liberating than running – it's one of the last questions everyone asks, "he says.

As in life, he adds that even though some characters will get redemption, they may not be the ones who really deserve it.

While writing the last season of a series with so many characters and twists to play, Nowalk explains that the biggest challenge is to get things done without resorting to a cliffhanger, as he has managed to put an end to the previous five seasons. "I do not want to leave the audience with a cliffhanger at all, I think it's the least satisfactory version of the show at all," he says.

But he also takes care to mention that he did not complete their life completely or did not answer definitively if they were better without Annalize in their life.

"They are young. They could very easily get a life sentence. They probably deserve that, if not a death sentence. But I really love that we have to meet them at this truly impressionable moment of their lives, and their lives have been devastated by this event and their own choices. They are very guilty and for the moment I just want to indicate where they are going, "he explains. "It's like the girls in the Manson family, how did they end up? I would be interested to come back to that. Who knows? If the series is a success, in 20 years, maybe I could do it. "
