Say your last goodbye to WhatsApp and switch to Telegram? Wouldn’t it be great if you could take all of your chat messages and media with you? Well, it is possible to import individual WhatsApp chats directly into Telegram!

The backup and restore function of WhatsApp is very limited. It doesn’t even work between Android and iPhone without third-party tool. But Telegram has an import feature that lets you forward conversations from other messaging apps like WhatsApp, Line, and KaKaoTalk on a chat basis. Although it sounds tedious, it gets the job done. In this guide, we will focus on WhatsApp.

Once the chat is imported, messages will be displayed for both parties. Imported messages will be added to the bottom of the discussion, but they will have their original timestamp.

All you have to do is export the chat from WhatsApp and import it into Telegram. Here’s how it works on Android and iPhone.

Import WhatsApp chat history to Telegram for Android

Open the WhatsApp app and navigate to the conversation you want to export to Telegram.

Here, tap on the three-dot menu icon located at the top right corner.

Now select the “More” button.

From there, choose the option “Export chat”.

WhatsApp will now ask you if you want to export the chat with or without media. Exporting with media can be a few hundred MB, depending on your conversation. If you want to keep it light, go for the “No Media” option.

From the share sheet, press the “Telegram” application shortcut.

You will now see all your conversations in the Telegram app. Here, choose the conversation you want to import the messages into.

In the pop-up message, press the “Import” button.

The Telegram app will start importing your chat. Once it’s done, you’ll see the finish prompt. Here, press the “Done” button.

Telegram conversation will be updated with all WhatsApp data. It will also show you the original WhatsApp timestamps.

Import WhatsApp Chat History to Telegram for iPhone

The steps are slightly different for the iPhone. Open the WhatsApp app on your iPhone and go to the chat you want to export to Telegram.

Select WhatsApp contact

Here, tap on the contact’s profile name at the top of the screen.

Scroll down and tap on the “Export Chat” option.

WhatsApp will ask you if you want to export the chat with or without media. To keep the export light, choose the “No media” option.

In the share sheet, choose the “Telegram” application.

Find and choose the contact you want to import the chat into.

In the pop-up message, confirm the action by selecting the “Import” option.

Telegram will now import the chat. Once the process is complete, press the “Done” button.

You will find the WhatsApp messages in the Telegram chat, with their old timestamps.
