Especially if you’ve had your Tesla for a few years, you have – or still are – eligible for Tesla’s free Supercharge. Here are the best ways to determine if you or your Tesla Model still qualifies for free charging.
Tesla Supercharging Network
The Tesla Supercharger Network exists as a combined network of proprietary charging stations developed and implemented by Tesla. As a result, the automaker does not have to rely on third-party charging networks as most automakers producing electric vehicles currently do.
The Supercharger network was introduced in September 2012, starting with six Supercharger stations. These debuts coincided with the launch of Tesla’s Model S sedan, the first to use the new network.
Since then, the Supercharger network has grown to over 20,000 booths worldwide at over 2,100 stations or hubs. This includes North America, Europe, Asia, and even the Arctic Circle. Tesla recently passed 1,000 Supercharger stations in North America alone.
The average station usually has around 10 Supercharger booths, but some stations offer a lot more. For example, Tesla opened a 72-stall Supercharger station in Shanghai at the end of 2020, making it the largest in the world. Currently, Tesla is working on obtaining a permit for a 62 station station in the western part of Los Angeles, which could easily make it the largest in North America.
More recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company will open its network of superchargers to non-Tesla electric vehicles later this year.
As a result, the interchangeability between third-party networks and Tesla’s Supercharger network will expand significantly for the benefit of all electric vehicle owners.

Does Tesla still offer free Supercharge?
The short answer is yes, but not recently. When Tesla EVs truly started ramping up deliveries to customers after the launch of its Model S in 2012, many customers saw additional benefits like unlimited supercharging. Over time, Tesla has incorporated similar promotions for specific models or customers who have made a referral.
However, this remains one of the most puzzling potential benefits for Tesla owners old and new. We get a lot of questions, such as: How do I know if my Tesla has free and unlimited Supercharge? Is free overeating transferred? and Does Tesla still offer free Supercharge?
For now, there remains a select group of Tesla owners who can still receive free Supercharge benefits. Earlier this year, however, Tesla announced it would revamp its referral program as it admitted spending over $ 23 million on free Supercharge in 2021 alone … and that was in May.

While Tesla appears to be pivoting its Referral Mileage Bonus program, there are still plenty of Tesla that have been vested in Unlimited Free Supercharging. Here are some of the best ways to determine if you or your Tesla qualify.
First of all, it’s important to note some of the policy updates and news from Tesla that have happened since the automaker started offering free and unlimited supercharging in 2012. This should help you out. update :
- The original Tesla Roadster has no supercharging capabilities
- All versions of the Model S have seen some form of Tesla free supercharging
- Excluding the S 40 model, as it was the software limited S 60 model that needed to be unlocked

- Performance Model 3 comes with free and unlimited supercharging for the lifetime of the electric vehicle in 2018-2019
- However, this offer only applied to the first owner and is not transferable.

The easiest and clearest way to check if you or your Tesla has free, unlimited Supercharge is to contact Tesla directly. These days it can be more difficult to reach someone, but whether it’s by call or chat, it can be worth the wait to find out for sure whether or not you’re still eligible.
Verify your Tesla Account
- Log into your Tesla Account
- Next to your linked Tesla vehicle, select “manage” then “view details”
- Look for the “Free and Unlimited Supercharge” option listed
Note: This option will only tell you whether or not your Tesla has unlimited free boost or not, it will not tell you if this charging benefit is transferable.
