Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides and tips to get the most out of your gadgets, apps and connected services.

Facebook is well known for capturing user data to create profiles that advertisers can target – and which include location data for your phone. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, you can prevent the Facebook mobile app from following your position completely, or allow it to do so only when you use the app.

The company has introduced a new location control for Android application users and sends an alert to users, on iOS and Android, to check their location settings for the application.

Here's how to change your location permission:

On iOS

  • Launch the Facebook application on your phone, then go to Settings and privacy and press Settings.
  • Scroll to the Privacy section and press the Location option.
  • Click on Location and select your preferred setting as shown on the screen capture; As I prefer minimal tracking on my phone, I chose the option "Do not allow". You can also set this option to access your "Only when using the application" position.
