The end of 2020 was seen as a positive for many, but it was bittersweet at least in a way: Adobe has finally officially killed Flash Player.
This came as no surprise, as Adobe had announced that Flash would die on three years’ notice. This marks the end of a long era, the one that, in its heyday, provided bored teens with ways to entertain themselves in the high school computer lab. Before you could easily get high quality games for free on your phone, you had to settle for copyright infringing Flash nonsense. It was great.
Either way, Flash is gone for good and Adobe wants people to get all Flash Player residue off their computers because it no longer receives security updates. “Useless” and “potentially dangerous on the road” makes a bad combo. Fortunately, Adobe has official instructions on how to uninstall Flash Player on Windows and Mac.
Fortunately, the process seems quite streamlined and straightforward. Adobe has created a Flash Player uninstaller which you can find in one of these two instruction pages. Obviously, make sure you download the correct one for your operating system first. Once you’ve done that, open the download, click on the Flash Player Uninstaller icon, and let it do its magic.
On Mac, it was literally a push of a button for me. I told the program to remove Adobe Flash Player and that’s exactly what it did. You will likely need to close any browser windows you have open, so make sure you don’t lose the tabs you need. Once it’s done, the uninstaller app will let you know by directing you to a web page with a simple message from Adobe:
Flash had a hell of a run and it’s sad to see him go. Running a program to remove it from your computer might not seem like a goodbye, but hey, it’s the good memories that matter most.
