Cobie Smulders is back on television in ABC's new drama Stumptown. Smulders plays in Portland, Oregon, Dex Parios, in the cartoon-based series of Greg Rucka. Smulders has been in action movies before, like Marvel movies and Jack Reacher: never go back but she said Stumptown beat her like no other project where she has been.
Smulders spoke at the Television Critics Association in August about his work on Stumptown. Learn more about her character, stunts and behind-the-scenes challenges. The premieres of Stumptown tonight at 10 pm on ABC.
Why 'Stumptown' is harder than Marvel movies
First of all, Cobie Smulders has other Avengers to share the charge in Marvel movies. Marvel movies also take less time to shoot. She films episodes of Stumptown every week, all year round.
"It's a whole other beast," said Smulders. "The thing with cinema, is that you only have to be really fit for a few months. It will be the rest of my 30 years. I'm a little scared to see how I'm going to do it physically. "
'Stumptown' films action scenes in less time than Marvel
A Marvel movie could spend weeks filming a unique action sequence. Stumptown filmed a car chase with a fight in the car in one day.
"We have a very good stunt team and we train very hard and make sure we have everything in one day," said Smulders. "It's another challenge. It's physically exhausting, but you do not really hurt yourself. If you hurt yourself, someone does not do their job properly. "
Dex Parios is a new type of character for Cobie Smulders
Maria Hill is great, but Dex is even more complex.
"I like it," Smulders said. "I like the way she rolls as she feels. I like to somehow play a sexually ambiguous woman on TV on the network. I like the fact that she is somehow her own boss. There are no rules for her so it has excited me.
The gumshoe genre gives Cobie Smulders a lot of difficult dialogue with the gal to talk about.
"We are always trying to understand the tone of the situation. There is a certain P.I. way of talking, a bit like sassy one-liners that do not quite go, but there is a moment and a place for that, or to take that pace and modernize it. Usually, his humor comes from the situation, but I think there will be opportunities. There is a lot of physical comedy, but also really fun lines. "

Cobie Smulders is a multi-trait union on 'Stumptown'
The character defies Cobie Smulders, but Stumptown also challenges her behind the scenes. She is also Executive Producer of the series.
"It's an unknown territory for me," Smulders said. "I did not want to do something I had done before. And this is an opportunity to take action, to do more dramatic things and I am an E.P. and this allows me to have a creative control that I had never had before. "
Cobie Smulders also knows Portland
Stumptown runs in Los Angeles, not Portland, but Cobie Smulders knows it in the northwest.
"My in-laws are from Portland," said Smulders. "I spent all my summers at Portland Beach in Cannon Beach. I therefore have an affinity for the city. My hope is that we could go for exteriors and things because it was such a wonderful city and really enjoyed spending time. [I] want to make it a living part of our show. "
