the How to train his dragon The series has become one of the most popular and critically acclaimed animated franchises, and its third film, How to train your dragon: the hidden world, is about to end the fantasy series (and make us cry). But in another scenario, the last two films in the series could have been radically different.
Director Dean DeBlois in an interview with Peter Sciretta of the movie, he had in mind a different villain in the movie How to train your dragon 2 original plans. And this bad guy would have had repercussions leading to The hidden world.
The original villain of How to train your dragon 2
In the following of 2014, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) had brought peace between the dragons and humans through his indestructible friendship with Toothless. This peace was soon broken by the emergence of Drago Bludvist, a ruthless warrior and dragon hunter who seeks to conquer the world with an army of dragons.
But in the original plans for How to train his dragonit was a different villain who was testing the meticulous harmony created by Hiccup: his mother Valka. "Valka was originally supposed to be the sympathetic antagonist of this film," said DeBlois. "In other words, Hiccup met her in the same way as he did, and moved her to discover another dragon rider who was even more impregnated with the world of dragons. But his basic belief was that it was impossible to trust humans and that dragons should be protected from them. "
In How to train your dragon 2, Valka (Cate Blanchett) was back as a dragon rescuer after being long murdered by dragons who had attacked their village. But while she was not used to human interactions, she and Hiccup usually got along well – and even changed her relationship with her husband, Stoick (Gerard Butler) in a soft dance scene that was part of the extras of How to train your dragon 2. But in DeBlois' initial plan, Valka would have hit – perhaps violently – Hiccup's desire to teach people to get along with the dragons. He told us:
"Towards the end of the original version of the second film, she went to Berk to extract the dragons and put them in safety. As it was necessary to reckon with this unknown force, Drago Bludvist was coming. But he was really not going to be very present before the third movie. And it was Hiccup who was fighting his own mother to protect his way of life in Berk. And she leaves defeated but convinced that he will have to make a decision. "
Although the tumultuous reunion between Valka and his family was one of my favorite moments in How to train your dragon 2, this original plan intrigue me. It adds a personal touch to Hiccup and transforms the conflict of How to train your dragon 2 in a great philosopher, rather than your typical "crazy wants to kill the world". And that leaves the door open to Drago Bludvist, the last villain of the second movie (Djimon Hounsou), to return to a more sinister capacity.
Leaving the door open for How to train your dragon: the hidden world
The bad guy in How to train your dragon: the hidden world is a ruthless dragon hunter named Grimmel (F. Murray Abraham) who wants to control the alpha dragon and create an army. Sounds familiar? It's probably because DeBlois wanted Draco to be the big villain of the third How to train his dragon, who would see Valka change his habits and become Hiccup's "most powerful ally" in the face of Draco's invasion of Berk. But "it basically changed because, in reality, the mother's relationship was going to be problematic, as was our audience asking young children to look to their mothers and ask why their mother is fighting him. "Why does she remove the dragons?" He explained:
"But originally, the ambition was to have Drago Arc in the third film. He was going to have survived the defeat at the end of the second film and find himself stuck on an island in a heap of wrecks with the home of a very aggressive territorial dragon who wanted to see him dead. And so, once Draco realized that his character, Grimmel, had succeeded him in his own armada, he was determined to go back and reaffirm his position. The only way to leave the island was to become friends with this dragon. And so it's that kind of stubborn stubborn who tries to figure out how to gain respect and trust with this dragon. And in doing so, he develops this kind of affection for him. Thus, when he finally took part in the fight in the third act, he lands on the side of the Dragons. And ends up showing some steps towards redemption.
But DeBlois does not regret having modified the plans for How to train your dragon 2. "It was a story that would require far too much care, food and time to get it right," he said. And worst of all, it diverted the attention of Hiccup and Toothless, whose relationships were the backbone of the series. The third reminds them: "Without teeth and his call to nature," said DeBlois. No matter how much we could have achieved in terms of what we will have, there is no doubt that we will be screaming when the credits arrive.
How to train your dragon: the hidden world fly in theaters on February 22, 2019.
