The former Cartersville High pitcher, Sam Howard, won his first MLB victory on Sunday, throwing 1 2/3 of perfect innings to beat the San Diego Padres.
Adairsville's pride, Vic Beasley made an important sack late in the fourth quarter against Philadelphia in a prime time match Sunday night in Atlanta.
Elsewhere, several former athletes from Bartow County made a major contribution to their college teams. In cross-country, Cheyenne Spinks helped North Georgia win their own invitational tournament. on the network, Trevor Lawrence continued to rewrite Clemson's logbook; and in the field, Grace Hunter has proven essential to help Brewton-Parker win a huge victory.
PRO BASEBALL
Sam Howard (Colorado Rockies, Cartersville) – Howard won his first major league victory on Sunday, as the Rockies swept the San Diego Padres home. Howard entered the fifth inning with a withdrawal and worked until the sixth inning without allowing a run or a hit. He broke two. Howard also made two brief appearances earlier in the week. Thursday in Denver against the St. Louis Cardinals, Howard scored two outs in the eighth inning and eliminated Cards Dexter Fowler in a 10-3 loss. Saturday against the Padres, Howard played second baseman Greg Garcia – the only hitter he could face – in the eighth inning. The march charged the bases and Garcia finally managed to score in a five-pointer round of the Padres. The Rockies however stood firm for a 11-10 victory. Colorado is 65-85 and 31 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Western Division of the National League with less than two weeks remaining.
PRO FOOTBALL
Vic Beasley (Atlanta Falcons, Adairsville) – Beasley found a huge quarterback bag from Eagles Carson Wentz in the fourth quarter, while Philadelphia was trying to rally to win. On a third and 10, Beasley chased Wentz and dropped him for a 4-yard loss and bag at the 43-yard line from Philadelphia. The Eagles had a long pass to the next game, but the Falcons ended up stopping Philadelphia in a fourth run down the 16-yard line from Atlanta. Atlanta (1-1) goes to Indianapolis to face the Colts on Sunday.
FOOTBALL COLLEGE
Terry Berdin (Reinhardt So., Cartersville) – Berdin made two run attempts for a total of 21 yards, including a long 17-yard run. He also captured a 42-yard pass while the NAIA Eagles, ranked 10th, won 28-0 at the University of Campbellsville, Kentucky. The UK (3-0) will travel to West Palm Beach on Saturday to face Keizer University.
Chris Blackston (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville) – Blackston led the Wolves to 14th overall with nine wins in Saturday's UWG 24-14 win over Limestone in Gaffney, South Carolina. Blackston also broke two assists and had a quarter in a hurry. West Georgia (2-0) hosts the state of Albany on Saturday night at Carrollton.
Bryce Burgess (Reinhardt So., Adairsville) – Burgess had two carries for 24 yards, including an 18-yard run, while the Eagles won in Campbellsville.
Marcus Childers (Northern Illinois R-Jr., Adairsville) – Childers completed 3 of 5 passes for 28 yards and rushed twice for four yards in the Huskies' 44-8 loss to Nebraska. NIU (1-2) has a week off before going to Vanderbilt on September 28th.
Jonathan Cruz (Charlotte So., Cartersville) – Cruz scored 53 yards in the last game of the first half and started six of his eight kicks for the touchdown as the 49ers headed for UMass 52-17. Charlotte (2-1) plays at Clemson, No. 1, Saturday night.
Kurtis Feanny (Lenoir-Rhyne So, Woodland) – Feanny was part of the Bears offense that racked up 354 yards to beat Virginia Union 28-11 Saturday in Richmond. Lenior-Rhyne (2-0), ranked ninth, entertains Saturday in Newberry the opening of the South Atlantic conference.
Dylan Forman (Shorter, Woodland) – Forman was on the Hawks' participation list and witnessed Saturday's loss to the Southwest Conference's 42-14 loss to West Florida. Shorter (0-2) will be heading to Fort Valley State this Saturday afternoon.
Miller Forristall (Alabama R-Jr., Cartersville) – Forristall had a catch for 7 yards on Saturday in the second-ranked Crimson Tide win 47-23 in South Carolina. Forristall, who was also honored at the CBS show as the Alabama's Alumna's Weekly Athlete, now has three receptions for the season for 40 yards and one touchdown. Alabama (3-0, 1-0 SEC) hosts Southern Miss Saturday.
Hunter Hardin (Point Jr., Wooded area) – Hardin was a starter for the Skyhawks on the offensive line in their 27-6 loss Saturday against South University of NAIA, ranked 19th in the world. Point (0-3) plays at St. Thomas University this Saturday.
Grant Harris (Victor CC So Valley, Cartersville) – Harris had five tackles, including four solo and one for the Rams' 37-5 loss at Chaffey College. VVC (1-1) hosts Southwestern CC on Saturday night.
Brady Jernigan (Maryville Sr., Woodland) – Jernigan made two tackles, including one for defeat, Saturday in the 27-22 loss to the Scots at Center College (Kentucky). Maryville (0-2) hosts Hanover College (Indiana) on Saturday.
JaCorey Johns (Wake Forest R-Fr., Cartersville) – Johns had a total of five tackles (two solo) Friday night in the home win of the North Carolina Demon Deacons 28-14. Wake (3-0) welcomes Elon this Saturday for his annual return match.
Bradley Kirk (Shorter So., Cartersville) – As a starter in the Hawks' defensive field, Kirk led his team to attack Saturday with 10, including seven solo. He now has 14 tackles in the first two games.
Trevor Lawrence (Clemson So., Cartersville) – Lawrence set a new career high in the assists in Saturday's 41-6 victory in Syracuse. Lawrence completed 22 of 39 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns. The quarterback also racked up 42 yards and found the end zone in the second quarter for his third touchdown of the season. He raked for over 300 yards for the first time this season and for the sixth time in his career. In Saturday's game, Lawrence became the 13th player in Clemson's history to reach the career cap of 4,000 total offensive yards and the 10th player in Tigers history to reach 4,000 yards. He now has the sixth highest number of passes in the history of the school. The 87-yard touchdown pass to Amari Rodgers in the third quarter was the longest in Lawrence's career. The pair also moved closer to a touchdown in the first quarter and Lawrence found Frank Ladson Jr. for a 7-yard score early in the fourth quarter.
Jacob Potter (Kennesaw State, Adairsville) – Potter collected all extra points and the Owls kickoff in their 42-7 win Saturday in Alabama. KSU (2-1) plays at Missouri State this Saturday afternoon.
John Scifers (West Georgia R-Jr., Woodland) – The Scifers scored six times Saturday for an average of 36.3 yards in the Wolves 24-14 win, ranked 14th in Limestone. His longest kick went for 44 yards.
Avery Showell (Georgia Tech, Cartersville) – Showell had a solo tackle in the third quarter of the night at the Yellow Jackets 27-24, lost Saturday against the Citadel. Georgia Tech (1-2) has a week off before heading to Philadelphia to face the Owls Temple on September 28th.
Jake Walker (Furman Jr., resident of Cartersville) – Walker played the Paladins' 24-17 loss on Saturday at Virginia Tech. Furman (1-2) starts his match against the Mercer on Saturday at home.
Bryce Wilkins (Reinhardt So., Cartersville) – Wilkins made his first start on Saturday in the left guard in the Eagles' 28-0 win at Campbellsville. He was also credited for a tackle in the second quarter after a 7-yard pass completed by Campbellsville.
CROSS COUNTRY
Parker Breedlove (Reinhardt Fr., Cartersville) – Breedlove ran 58th overall out of 101 competitors on Saturday at the North Georgia Cross Country Invitational in Oakwood. Breedlove covered the 8 km (4.97 miles) course in 31:36. Breedlove was seventh among his teammates. As a team, the Eagles ranked fifth on a dozen schools. The race was won by West Alabama from a point on Emmanuel College. Reinhardt will participate this Friday at the Wingfoot XC Classic at Sam Smith Park.
Cheyenne Spinks (North Georgia, Woodland) – Spinks finished 11th in 20 minutes and was the fifth scorer to score points for the Nighthawks, who won the 7th annual 5km UNG Cross Country Invitational Saturday. UNG finished seven points ahead of SCAD Atlanta, while the Southern University ranked third. North Georgia will run Friday night in the Wingfoot XC Classic at Sam Smith Park.
SOCCER
Emily Collum (Southwestern Georgia State, Adairsville) – Collum took two shots, a shot on goal and 20 minutes in the Hennessy's 5-2 loss to Middle Georgia State last Tuesday. Collum did not shoot a shot, but she saw 35 minutes of Saturday play time in a 2-1 loss to Spring Hill College. Georgia Southwestern (1-2) hosts the Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday night and will travel to Rome on Saturday for an evening match at Shorter University.
Havyn Isaac (Georgian Military College, Adairsville) – Isaac witnessed 30 minutes of action on the spectators 'bench Friday in the Bulldogs' 6-0 shutout at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. She had a backup. GMC (2-2-1, 2-1-1 GCAA) hosts another conference match on Friday against South Georgia State CC.
Kurt Moore (Birmingham Southern Sr., resident of Euharlee) – Moore had two wins on the net this weekend as the Panthers won 4-2 on Friday at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, and defeated East Texas Baptist University 3-2 in overtime on Sunday. Moore started and made the two wins, making three saves at LeTourneau and six against East Texas Baptist. BSC (3-2-1) is hosting the University of Belhaven this Saturday night.
Marissa Mowry (Anderson So., Cartersville) – Mowry started and played 71 minutes in the Spartans 2-1 win on Wednesday night on USC-Aiken. Anderson (1-1) entertains Newberry Wednesday on the first day of the South Atlantic Conference. The Spartans go to Wingate for a conference game Saturday night.
Courtney Rhea (Berry So., Cartersville) – Rhea played in the last eight minutes of the first half of the Vikings' 3-2 win at home last Wednesday against Huntingdon College. She also took part in the 63rd minute of Sunday's 7-2 win over Agnes Scott and shot a shot on goal. Berry (5-1) plays at Covenant College tonight and goes to Belhaven University on Saturday afternoon.
VOLLEYBALL
Nedu Evans (Augusta Fr., Cartersville) – The Jags have won three straight sets over the weekend, beating Friday's Albany State and King University (Tennessee) and Emmanuel College. Augusta (5-2) today welcomes Belmont Abbey and will travel to West Alabama on Friday before entertaining the University of Montevallo and Southern Arkansas University Saturday.
Grace Hunter (Brewton-Parker Fr., Cartersville) – Hunter led his team with 13 kills, reaching 0.417 with only three attack errors in the match on Saturday, as the Barons clinched their first win of the year and their first conference win in years, beating Middle Georgia State. BPC (1-9, 1-0) plays at Agnes Scott on Wednesday night before heading to Keizer University and Florida College in Temple Terrace, Florida. On Saturday, they will travel to Lakeland, Florida, to face Southeastern University.
