Howie Roseman explains how the Eagles lined up on their roster of 53 players

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman spoke shortly after the team announced the latest cuts to qualify. This was the first time Howie had been speaking since the NFL 2019 draft and he had a lot to say about why they had taken some action and what they were still trying to do before week 1.

Howie opened by saying:

"Today is difficult for us as an organization. We have a lot of players who have done a lot of good things. Every person who was on this list, we chose, we chose, and so these conversations are difficult. We wish them the best of luck, while thanking them for all their contributions. "

After opening the debate, Howie acknowledged that they considered the list as a list of 63 people. So they looked at this list and the people they wanted to keep on the active list. But, they still plan to make adjustments over the next few days – with a training team to fill and players to waive to claim.

On the offensive line

Roseman was asked why he had so much confidence in a fairly young group of guys. He noted that if you look at the starting group, it's a group for which he's really excited, then with guys like Big V who was able to play as starting striker in the Super Bowl and then to go to the guard and show its value there. .

He also mentioned the choice of first-round draft Andre Dillard, who will not start in the team right away, but who has a lot of confidence in him. Plus, the replacements behind all these guys have versatility, and a good mix of veterans and youngsters (that they can develop) on the offensive line.

On the tight end group

He was asked if they would eventually create another close match, not just the alignment lineup for the active match day. Howie went on to say that a lot of things go into the equation, and again mentioned that they had a versatility with the guys who were on their list, but that they were looking for what they had need both in attack and in special teams.

Howie confirmed that they would certainly add a tight end to the 63-player lineup, but they will see how the week unfolds.

On the RB cuts made

It was pointed out that the two semi-lost Saturday – Wendell Smallwood and Josh Adams – were the biggest producers of 2018.

"Good players. And you talk about our best striker and a guy who played for us at the Super Bowl, so these are tough conversations to have. I think it's just a testament to what we have in this room, we're really excited about it.

jordan [Howard]Had an amazing off-season and you see his vision, his instinct, his power. And miles [Sanders] really came, and get Darren [Sproles] back and just what he can do, obviously in the passing game, as a revenant, his veteran leadership. And then we talk about complementary roles, and each piece having complementary roles, and Corey [Clement] he really can play all four down, and he's a hell of a special team and he looks 100%.

So, we love how all these guys are playing each other. "

Keeping 5 safeties

Howie explained how they had watched the gorup that they had, obviously starting with Malcolm Jenkins and the kind of player he was, and then by the return of Rodney McLeod was huge. But Andrew Sendejo was one of the biggest (good) surprises he had during the off-season, and his way of behaving, working and studying, as well as his athleticism, are all exciting for the defense of the Eagles.

And then, with Johnathan Cyprien, they could see a role for him as they began to move from talent acquisition to defining the type of responsibility they could assume. Howie acknowledged that the situation would be different for Cyprien, who has to start every match for which he was available, but now in this fourth role in safety, the Eagles will need something different from him – including being a leader in special teams. But they had this conversation with him and he assumes that role and wants to help the team win.

And then Rudy Ford:

"Rudy was one of those special team guys who jumped the wire, and he can play specific roles. We must do it right and we will do it. Then when he comes back, I think our fans will understand why we like them in the special teams. I mean, he had a bit of speed, he can play some of the roles we really wanted during the off season, so we're looking forward to doing it. "

On the defensive ends

Howie smiled and said that they probably had a different opinion about their group's defensive end compared to what is reported. He went on to say that they were watching the group, and Jim Schwartz said he was excited about Derek Barnett, who is a good football player and who will have the opportunity to start.

He also stated that we all know the type of player Brandon Graham and that Vinny Curry looked better than he was two years ago and returned with renewed focus and energy. Howie also said he was excited about their young players.

"And we are excited about our young group. If you were watching and looking around and saying which young defenseman had the best pre-season, I did not know there was a better young defenseman than Daeshon Hall this preseason. He deserves a lot of credit. He went to work on his body during the off season. He came back 30 pounds heavier, then he proved it on the ground.

In addition, he noted that Josh Sweat had made a great camp and they expect it to help, as does Shareef Miller. Howie also said that they should devote themselves to the development of young players, especially to manage the salary cap and current contracts, they had to invest in young players.

On their class project

Yeah, really excited by these three guys. It was funny when I saw Joe [Douglas] In the field, I said, "Our top three choices worked very well." And he added, "Our top three picks or top three picks?" He was a little confused by the question.

But André [Dillard] has a chance to be an excellent player and he has an excellent work ethic and he continues to work on anything that is perceived as weaknesses. He has big feet. He is really in the game and he may have the best left tackle of all time to learn. It's really exciting, and for him, once again, to sit there, develop and learn, it's probably above what we thought we could do at that time. which is really exciting.

miles [Sanders] has a chance to really contribute to this football team this year. He has an excellent combination of feet and power. I think one of the things that may be difficult to achieve until you see Miles in the pads is how much power he plays. He is not afraid of lowering his shoulder and, in fact, he has a little punch and so it's a guy who will have the opportunity to play here and contribute right away, and I think that's exciting.

I think for J.J. [Arcega-Whiteside] to go out and have this third pre-game and you see a little bit of all the skills we've been looking at, great hands, the NFL body, know how to play big and again, what a great opportunity for him to learn from one of the best big-body receivers of the National Football League at Alshon [Jeffery].

We are excited, but pre-season is one thing. Now the lights go on and these guys will have the opportunity to prove it throughout the regular season.

On specific players

Howie explained that the goal of the off season is to find as much talent as possible and add as many guys as possible who might be able to contribute. Then, before you start the final list, you really start looking for specific roles. and responsibilities for each player.

Greg Ward

"Greg did a great job, and I do not really have an answer to what he could have done other than that, we try to balance all the people that we have at every post and what we seek offensively, defensively, and on special teams. And sometimes it's just about looking for a specific role for this place.

And when we look at the big receiver room, what we were looking for and what Greg had done on the special teams and maybe what we were looking for from the fifth receiver on the special teams, it was just not one thing he did.

You're right, Greg had a great summer.

Clayton Thorson

"When we made the decision to sign Josh [McCown]Obviously, it put Clayton in a difficult situation and we looked at the situation in which we were in recent years and the quarter-room, and how Josh would fit into Carson. Sometimes we forget that Carson is 26 years old and Nate [Sudfeld] is a young player, and have this veteran with these guys, and you already see the chemistry grow. Really excited about this quarterback room, at the same time, of course, you drop a fifth-round pick. "

He went on to explain that in the remaining 31 NFL teams, players selected higher and lower than the fifth round will suffer cuts. In the end, they have to do their best for their football team.

"We will not just keep the guys in the team just because we recruited them in a certain round."

Treyvon Hester

I think when you talk about Treyvon, you're right, Treyvon is an NFL player and it's a tough race.

Again, I think when you do that, you try to build a list of 90 players and you try to build a list of 90 players that is really competitive and that has 90 players who have the opportunity to play in the National Football League. everything seems fine until you get to this point and then you have to actually cut the guys who have a chance to be claimed and lose them and then you do not feel so good.

I think we were just trying to look at the skills we had at the end and the defensive tackle and try to mix them up and match them to get a nice and complementary skill.

[DT] Hassan [Ridgeway] and Treyvon are two different players. They are both good players, but they have different skills and our other defensive tackles have different skills, and we have defensive goals that can be reduced if we need them. We went a little hard in defense, but they are not easy decisions. I think we had a lot of difficulty with that because of the type of players and people we had to let go today.

Other notable

  • Howie would not enter into specific business discussions regarding Jadaveon Clowney but noted that they were still looking for a potentially available player.
  • He also said that cutting Treyvon Hester indicated that they thought Fletcher Cox would be ready to leave, week 1, which is important!
