HP launches 5 Chromebooks with Jasper Lake, MediaTek and a unique stylus

BETT 2021, like everything else, has gone virtual this year. Although the Global Education and Technology Conference doesn’t start until the 20th, major Chromebook makers are already ditching a slew of new Chromebooks. Acer rocked the boat with the first Jasper Lake devices to hit the market as well as the first EDU Chromebook to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7c processor. For good measure, Acer released a refreshed Chromebook 311 that uses the same ARM MediaTek 8183 processor as the Lenovo Duet.

Not to be outdone, HP has arrived (virtually) at BETT 2021 with five new Chrome OS devices to add to the company’s resume. Like Acer, HP has exploited the ARM-based MediaTek 8183 as well as the new Intel Jasper Lake processors. There’s no Snapdragon in the mix, but HP brought a surprise to the party in the form of a parked, rechargeable USI stylus. More on this topic in a minute. Here’s a look at the five new Chromebook EDU offerings from HP.

HP 14 G7 Chromebook

First, HP updated its Chromebook 14 with the latest small Intel processors. Jasper Lake processors include the dual-core N4500 and the quad-core N5100 which are the successors to the Gemini Lake-R chips in the current generation of many EDU Chromebooks and Windows devices. The HP Chromebook 14 G7 is equipped with a fold-flat hinge, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, and classroom-ready features like a spill-resistant keyboard and optional privacy screen for the device Photo.

With its 14-inch screen, this Chromebook is intended for teachers. Optional upgrades like 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a Full HD touchscreen should make this model a great choice for teachers in a Google-centric classroom. The two speakers and two microphones are perfect for distance learning and video conferencing. HP’s Chromebook 14 G7 will be available in February with a price still to be determined.

HP x360 11 G4 EE Chromebook

HP’s latest 11.6 ″ Education Edition convertible is probably the most interesting on the list for several reasons. Like the 14 G7, it incorporates Intel’s new Jasper Lake processors. These small main processors are expected to offer a significant improvement in performance over the previous generation Gemini Lake chips. Gemini Lake-R has proven to be a terrific processor for EDU and budget devices. Jasper Lake could narrow the gap between small and large processors even further.

The most interesting feature of this particular model happens to be the stylus. The optional stylus is a USI stylus, but like the Lenovo C13 Yoga Chromebook, the HP stylus is stowable and this is also how it charges. It’s clearly not the first Chromebook to do this, but it’s the first Chrome OS device we’ve ever seen to use such a smart place to store the pen. Instead of sliding into the base of the Chromebook, the stylus has a comfortable little cradle directly above the keyboard. This makes accessing the stylus quick and easy, which is exactly what you want in the classroom.

HP Chromebook x360 11 G4 EE Garaged Stylus

Other than that, the x360 11 G4 EE presents exactly what you would expect from an educational device. It comes with up to 8GB of RAM and 32GB / 64GB of storage. The screen is an 11.6 ″ HD touchscreen with optional Gorilla Glass and of course you can get the optional stylus. This Chromebook comes with two cameras, one being the standard 720p webcam while the other is a world-facing 8MP camera with autofocus. HP mounted the world-facing camera on the left keyboard of the left palm rest. The HP Chromebook x360 14 G4 EE is expected to launch in March and will be available in Jet Black and Nautical Teal.
