HTC has not brought any new smartphone to the World Mobile Congress this year. But the company jumps on the 5G train with a new multi-function device that … does a lot of things, honestly.
At the most basic level, HTC 5G Hub is an access point / router / hub that you can use to connect up to 20 users to a 5G network, whether you are at home, at the office or on the go.
But it also has a touch screen allowing you to use it to run Android apps without connecting to a phone, tablet or other device. Plus, it supports video output, which allows you to connect it to a 4K TV to stream video or games at speeds up to 60 frames per second.
The HTC 5G Hub will be available in select markets from the second quarter of 2019. In the US, it will be compatible with Sprint's new 5G network.
If the HTC 5G Hub is not technically a smartphone, it basically has the courage. It is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and a Snapdragon X50 5G modem. The system has 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage and a microSD card reader supporting cards up to 512 GB.
There is a 5-inch capacitive touch screen, 1280 x 720 pixels in front, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port that you can use to charge the device or connect an external display. HTC has equipped the system with a battery of 7 660 mAh. It should therefore be able to work for a certain time between two charges.
The device has a motion sensor, stereo speakers and supports voice commands thanks to a microphone always on the lookout.
Let's move on to the elements that distinguish this device from a phone. It weighs about 12 ounces and measures 5.1 "x 3.9" x 1.7 "which makes it a little bulky for phone or tablet standards.
The system also supports 802.11a / b / g / n / ac / ad WiFi and supports up to 20 WiFi connections. HTC says that in the future, you can use it to deliver VR content from the cloud to the company's Vive Focus virtual reality headset without the need for a PC or extra cables.
Other features include support for Bluetooth 5.0 and SIM for some 4G LTE and 5G networks (a list of supported tapes can be found on the HTC website).
