Huawei founder reveals intention to beat US sanctions

One Google app that Huawei users have been able to use without Google certification is the Duo video chat app. But just as messages won’t be available on uncertified Huawei devices next spring, the same fate will befall the Duo app. According to XDA, the code strings found on version 123 of Duo (and now available on the Google Play Store) reveal phrases that say, “Duo will be disappearing soon” and “Because you are using an incompatible device, Duo will soon deregister your account on this device. Download your snippets and call history to avoid losing them. “

Note that the code strings for Duo refer to unsupported devices as opposed to non-certified devices like with Messages. While unsupported phones do not conform to the Google mobile service ecosystem and are treated the same as non-certified models, the difference is that after Duo shuts down for these handsets on March 31. , there will be a 14 day grace period during which users will be able to save and download their data from Duo before the service is discontinued.

At present, Duo can be installed and used on Huawei P40 Pro series without the phone running Google Mobile Services (GMS). This will end on March 31 unless Huawei is removed from the entity list and allowed to install GMS on its models missing from the Google ecosystem. For that to happen, the new US president will have to decide what to do with the Chinese automaker in general. So far, the new administration has had no word on how it plans to treat Huawei, TikTok, Xiaomi, SMIC and other Chinese tech companies.

Meanwhile, Huawei founder Ren Zhenfei gave a speech last June explaining how Huawei can survive sanctions imposed by the United States. The speech had just been published last week and ended up in the South China Morning Post (SCMP). Zhenfei, who is also the CEO of Huawei, said the company needs to decentralize its operations, focus on achieving profits, simplify product lines and freeze salaries for three to five years. The 76-year-old executive said US actions against Huawei had prevented the company from implementing its original globalization plans and forced Huawei to develop its own production lines. As Zhenfei said, “There is a big mismatch between our capabilities and our strategy. It is our weakest link, and we are forced to start from the beginning as elementary school students.”

Zhenfei says Huawei will not be defeated, nor will he become angry with the United States. Speaking to Huawei over the summer, Ren said, “Please don’t get angry at the temporary pressure from the United States, or abandon our strategy of globalization. There is no future without embracing globalization (in development and research). In addition to having to motivate employees while maintaining the salary freeze for the next three to five years, Ren said Huawei needs to focus on results. “We need to gradually shift our focus from the top line to the top line. from the bottom. All product lines… don’t have to blindly become # 1… we don’t have the conditions to always strive to be # 1, “Ren said.” We need to create reasonable value and profit to ensure healthy growth. ” So instead of worrying about how many units Huawei ships, the company’s founder says he needs to focus on profitability.

According to Ren, the United States wants Huawei to die. He said, “At first we thought we could have done something wrong in accordance and we did a self-examination; but then the second blow and the third blow followed. Then we realized that they wanted us dead … but the desire to survive also motivated us ”.
