The P30 series is making waves in the world of smartphones, especially the P30 Pro with its awesome camera. But a Huawei flagship product can also be cheaper, or much cheaper, in the form of Huawei P30 Lite. We examined this closely in our practical test.
Huawei P30 Lite with pre-order promotion
The Huawei P30 Lite has a very attractive price; the smartphone costs 369 euros. Although confirmed for a launch in the UK, we still have no official price, although a simple conversion would put it at £ 230. Huawei offers three color variants: peacock blue with a chic color gradient, midnight black and pearl white for those who like a little simpler.
The launch of the P30 Lite will take place on May 8th. However, Huawei has developed a rather attractive package for pre-orders, which receive free Huawei Freebuds Lite. This is not a bad deal because the true wireless headset in the Airpod design of Apple regularly costs 129 euros. The offer is valid until May 7th and only for Peacock Blue and Midnight Black colors.
P30 Lite with a chrome look instead of metal
A couple of years ago, the Huawei P30 Lite with its 6.15-inch screen diagonal would have been one of the biggest smartphones on the market. But thanks to the narrow edges, mini drop-shaped notch and generally larger smartphones on the market, the smartphone is now considered medium-sized. The ratio of the screen size to the total front area is 84.1%, which is pretty good. With its rounded edges, the P30 Lite fits well in the hand.
The frame and the bezel surrounding the camera shine with a chic chrome look, but are plastic and not metal. On a second look, you can see it. The back is also plastic, but its appearance is almost as good as the glass of the P30 Pro.
Huawei has been very successful in the treatment
In this case, only the SIM card carriage is not fully aligned with the frame. The transition between the display, the frame and the back is not as smooth as the P30 Pro, but it is still well done.
The display needs to be adjusted
Huawei has equipped the P30 Lite with an IPS display. Its resolution is 2,312 x 1,080 pixels, a little more than the Full HD resolution. This translates to a pixel density of 415 dpi. It is more than enough and allows a clear representation. The colors are pleasantly restricted in the default setting, those who like the loudest can set this in the settings. I advise you to use the "hot" display here because the display has a slight blue hue. It is worthwhile to try a few of these settings and find the ones that suit you best.
Although the sharpness is absolutely sufficient, it should have been a little more in two places: the brightness and the viewing angles. In bright sunlight, the Huawei P30 Lite's display reaches its limits during the test and the stability of the viewing angle is better with the more expensive smartphones. For the price class, however, the
the overall performance is good.
Latest Android with little bloatware
The Huawei P30 Lite with Android 9 Pie works with the
EMUI 9 as we can expect
. The Huawei interface offers many features, but also does a lot of things differently compared to Android. You have to like that. Huawei is reluctant to use pre-installed third-party applications. Only Amazon, Booking and Facebook are available here. Interesting: the P30 Lite does not have its own browser, which Huawei has provided to the P30 Pro. Well, Chrome is enough now.
Enough power even for a Lite
With the Huawei HiSilicon brand Kirin 710, the P30 Lite incorporates a mid-range mainstream chip that can use 4GB of RAM. This is not bad, but it does not necessarily cause much cheering. Especially with graphically complex games, it should remain tense despite the GTP Turbo 2.0, supposed to increase the efficiency of graphics processing and avoid delays.
However, in normal operation, the Huawei P30 Lite responds quickly and easily, although
not so fast
like real smartphones. But they also cost more than double. The memory capacity is 128 GB, which can be extended via microSD and not the Huawei NM card.
More megapixels than any other
The Huawei P30 Lite's triple camera is composed of a 48-megapixel wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle 8-megapixel lens and a 2-megapixel telephoto lens. The latter allows a 2x zoom lossless. The front camera has 24 megapixels. Video enthusiasts will appreciate the Super Slow Motion feature, which offers 16x slow motion and UHD recording, and can let off steam creatively with the Huawei P30 Lite.
Especially, the ultra wide angle lens is
exceptional in this price class
, as well as the 48-megapixel high resolution of the main camera. The early plans seem attractive in good lighting, but most smartphones do it right now. If you zoom in on the exceptions, you'll notice that the P30 Lite's software makes the images sharper, but in normal view, this is not a problem.
With selfies, it is recommended to directly disable artificial beauty effects. The richness of the details of the front camera plans in the Huawei P30 Lite is very good in the test, but the HDR effect exaggerates a bit in some lighting situations with halo effects, which recall the first HDR photos from a few years ago. . It's better now, but it's still too early for a final verdict.
3,340 mAh battery capacity but no wireless charge
The Huawei P30 Lite has a battery capacity of 3,340 mAh. The lithium polymer battery should reach up to 293 hours in standby or 21 hours in conversation – we will of course check this when testing the Huawei P30 Lite. QuickCharge with the corresponding power supply is on board, but not the huge 40 watt charger of the P30 Pro.
Wireless charging is not supported.

A good price-performance ratio
For the price of 369 euros, the Huawei P30 Lite has a lot to offer, that's for sure. Especially with the camera, other mid-range smartphones might have a hard time keeping up. It is logical that in this price class, all that shines – or in this case: the metal – does not shine in gold. The final review of the Huawei P30 Lite will show if the battery life meets the most stringent requirements and how the screen can work in everyday life.
