In addition to the 5G-compatible Kirin 990 and FreeBuds 3 processors, Huawei announced today a refresh of the P30 Pro, including new two-color color gamuts and enhanced camera features. It is interesting to note that Huawei calls this updated version the "new P30 Pro", in order to bring the 6-month phone back into the spotlight. Huawei should delay the release of the Mate 30 Pro in the West, so a facelift of the P30 Pro could fill this void.

A visual refresh

Similar to some of Huawei's other colors, the new Misty Lavender and Mystic Blue do not look like what you imagine. Misty Lavender leans more towards pink than purple, while Mystic Blue looks teal at certain angles. The two-tone back is very pixel-esque and has a matte and shiny background at the top.

Misty Lavender and Mystic Blue are not as bold as the original Breathing Crystal or Amber Sunrise versions, but the new colors still look very bright. They also have a reserved look that is not ostentatious, but that still attracts your attention.

Misty Lavender and Mystic Blue will be available on September 20th in Europe. As these are new colors and not new Huawei smart phones, they are not affected by the US government ban. It's a wise move by Huawei to boost sales of its flagship smartphone without being overtaken by the US government.

A good camera is better

The P30 Pro has been hailed for its powerful camera system and Huawei is now building it with new features.

"Super Night Selfie" enhances what the name says – it is supposed to brighten and embellish self-portraits taken in low light, while decreasing the intensity of background lighting in order to make the darker details in dark areas. This sounds a lot like an HDR adaptation for low-light applications.

Huawei has added an AI-based feature that creates vlog-like videos from images and videos from your image gallery. The artificial intelligence angle looks interesting, but the feature can be simply a magnified slideshow creator. We will have to see it for ourselves.

Huawei also talked about improvements to the portrait mode of the P30 Pro, although the news is not clear.

Some of these features have already been launched on the Chinese versions of the P30 and P30 Pro.

EMUI 10, the same hardware specifications

The "new" Huawei P30 Pro will run the EMUI 10 on Android 10. The latest version of the Huawei skin includes a lot of visual refinement, an improved dark mode and an improved camera application. You can find out more about EMUI 10 in our practical work.

Huawei also announced the opening of a public beta version of the EMUI 10 / Android 10 update for the P30 Pro later this month.

The rest of the P30 Pro is exactly as you remember. This means a 6.47-inch OLED display with Full HD + (2,340 x 1,080) resolution, a built-in fingerprint scanner, a triple rear camera system of 40 MPa / 8 MPa + 20 MP, Huawei's internal Kirin 980 processor, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage, a battery of 4,200 mAh and Android 9 Pie currently under EMUI 9.1.

In his comment, our own Bogdan Petrovan felt that the P30 Pro was one of the best full-featured smartphones currently available. He was particularly impressed by the image quality and battery life of the phone.
