Huawei has gone from underdog to one of the world's largest phone brands, thanks to the merger of intense marketing and the creation of ever-improving phones.
The new Huawei P30 Pro takes a lot of what we saw with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro but enhances some elements of the design as well as the restart of the camera. This is a significantly stronger phone than the Huawei P30 in many ways.
We spent an hour playing with the new phone of the Chinese brand and, although some of the items seemed a little too familiar, some of the features of the camera completely stunned us.
Design and screen

The Huawei P30 Pro is available in four colors: a light blue (called Breathing Crystal … we know it), the violet / blue mix of "Aurora", the orange "Amber Sunrise" and the most classic … "Black ")
The range is pearly and sparkles with different rather attractive tones, with the exception of black, which is basically reflective enough to be a mirror. We assume that the name "Black Mirror" has not been authorized.
Our briefing did not tell us exactly the size of the phone, but the 6.47-inch OLED screen fits snugly in the front of the phone, with a small drop-shaped notch for the camera.
The notch already seems a little outdated on the phones – we were surprised not to see a punch.
It is interesting to hear Huawei's call qualified "handsome" when, in previous briefings, we were told how much the idea of selfie-punch-hole cam is the # 39; future … at least, that's what the sister company of Huawei, Honor told us, and they have the same design team.

The overall effect of the screen quality is that while it's "only" Full HD, you get a very impressive image. The maximum brightness sometimes stuns, with a brilliant sunset that turns off a dark scene. However, we are not sure that there is HDR support in the screen here, so this is something we would like to follow up soon.
If you're waiting for a vibrant OLED technology here, it's best not to click this "Pre-order Now" button until you've seen the P30 Pro's softer and more natural colors on the screen. This is certainly not a problem, but it is something you will want to check in person.
The design of the Huawei P30 Pro is not revolutionary, even if the screen fades and tilts on the sides of a thick aluminum strip that bypasses the outside of the device.
This tape contains the USB-C connector (but unfortunately no headphone jack, unlike the 'normal' P30), as well as the monaural mono speaker with trigger down. It's a bit old-fashioned not to have stereo speakers, but it's because there's no conventional speakerphone to take calls – the screen itself vibrates with technology called magnetic levitation.
The output of this speaker is only good – it's not the best we've ever heard, but for one option, it is better than expected in terms of volume and clarity of the music broadcast.
The camera line rests proudly on the back of the phone and connects the four sensors together, which can create a rather unbalanced feeling when placed on the table. but the volume and power button is well placed at the point where the thumb falls off the right side of the phone.
Camera
The great feature that Huawei has spent so much time informing us about is the new P30 Pro camera system, which he says will inspire us to completely rethink smartphone photography. The main objective is the Super Spectrum sensor, a 40 MPa effort that can attract light to a ridiculously high ISO with a f / 1.6 lens for high-quality night-time images.
The SuperSpectrum sensor is the most important function here: it has replaced each of the green pixels of a standard RGB sensor by two yellow pixels, which means that the sensor will be able to shoot more light information. and color. , with increased ability to suck red and green light.
In combination with Huawei's strong intelligence in artificial intelligence (AI) photography, the results should be impressive. This camera is flanked by a 5x telephoto camera (feat obtained by turning the light 90 degrees inside the phone to give it more space to reflect the image), as well as an imaging sensor to flight distance (for better blur in the background). ) and an ultra-wide mode, using a 20MP sensor.

The Huawei P30 Pro also has a lossless 10x zoom, says the brand, with built-in smart AI technologies – and it uses this feature to provide a 50x digital zoom, to take pictures of the moon when it's pretty , or Take a look at a poster located across the street, in a demonstration area. Just for example, do not say we do that.
So, how does the camera work on the Huawei P30 Pro? Pretty good. The photos taken inside and outside look clean and snap together quickly, but show the same level of sharpness that Huawei phones seem to offer – it will be up to you to decide if it's a bold feature or not.
The background blur on the photos also looks great, although the shutter lag is quite pronounced – in fact, most of the pictures we took saw the Huawei P30 Pro asking us to "stay still" after taking the photo to be able to highlight the photos with its AI mode.

The depth sensor took a little time to work.
The night mode has not impressed massively, but when all you can do in a test area is to wrap yourself in a curtain, this is not the most scientific tests.
However, we found that the iPhone XS Max had created a night image similar to that of the P30 Pro. We therefore do not expect the new phone will disrupt the dominance of Google Pixel 3 in the low light market.

The selfie camera is powerful – more powerful than it would be necessary, some say – at 32 MP and takes a sufficiently strong image.
There is the smile mode to take a shot, but we found that we had to smile very widely to have a chance that the function works, unless the press room disturbs us.
However, it is in the zoom department that the Huawei P30 Pro really excels. The 5x telephoto zoom and the 10x enhanced magnification both work incredibly well (but not so much at night), and focusing on a small poster in front of the road showed that the 50x zoom also gave strong photos and net.
Huawei's artificial intelligence game is powerful at the moment. It uses internal intelligence to improve the quality of photos. This is usually the same with Aplomb.
In a month or two, when an update will be available, you will even be able to record a video with a small window zooming on the action … we do not see why you would really like to do it, so do not not being a launching feature is not the end of the world.
Drums
The battery life of the Huawei P30 Pro was not disclosed by the brand, but it revealed a more powerful power supply inside the phone with a power of 4,200 mAh.
Since we know that Huawei provides excellent battery management features, we expect this internal juice box to continue to function properly for at least a day.
However, if the levels seem a little low before you leave work, the Huawei P30 Pro's 40W fast charge lets you reach 70% power in just 30 minutes, which is pretty amazing.
There is also the speed of 15 W wireless charging and the ability to charge another phone or a pair of wireless powered headphones with a wireless reverse power supply. Really, we live in the future.
What does it look like to use?
The Huawei P30 Pro uses EMUI 9.1, a Kirin 980 chipset and an untold amount of RAM – no, literally, they did not tell us what it was. We assume about 8GB, but like internal storage, no idea of what is on offer, although we were expecting storage to start at 128GB for a brand like Huawei.
The speed of navigation around the Huawei P30 is up to what you expect from a modern smartphone. There is a certain fluidity under the finger and the extremely fast reactions of the connectivity of our test impressed us when we walked TechRadar.
EMUI 9.1, the latest version of Huawei's overlay for Android, is cheaper than before, with Google's integration with Western versions of this phone on the left screen. There are also fewer messages that appear everywhere as you navigate, and combined with quick entrails and clear screen, the Huawei P30 Pro is able to guide you through the tasks of everyday life.
There are still some confusing and slightly annoying bugs in the system, for example with the AI video editor, which is supposed to be able to edit clips without any input – we could not find it anywhere in the camera screen.
It is not as fluid as the iPhone XS or the Samsung Galaxy S10. Some elements of EMUI still feel a little too complex and offer too many choices and changes to make. But compare it to a Huawei phone that is only five years old and you will see a radical change in the operation of the interface.
Early verdict
The Huawei P30 Pro is one of the brand's most powerful phones, but upgrades seem a little more progressive this year.
The new colors shine well, the drop-shaped notch on the screen is not too intrusive, and although the camera system offers at least something different, it still remains minor.
The speed under the finger is nice, but we are eager to test the real differences between the Huawei P30 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro from last year, or the Huawei P20 Pro, to see how much this has really changed .
