It’s been well over a year since a U.S. ban forced Google to halt Huawei, but an ongoing and renewed license has allowed the two companies to work together and continue to support phones already in the hands of consumers. with Android updates. Now, however, that license is in jeopardy.
The Washington Post reports that last Thursday the general license that allowed Google to work with Huawei on maintenance of current phones expired. Technically speaking, this license was designed to help rural communities in the United States whose networks relied on Huawei equipment, providing time to acquire new equipment.
In an email, the US Department of Commerce said the license provided “an opportunity for users of Huawei devices and telecommunications providers to continue to temporarily operate these devices and existing networks while accelerating the transition to alternative suppliers ”.
Regarding Android updates for Huawei devices, Google has confirmed that it was this now-expired license that allowed the company to help support current Huawei smartphones and tablets. The company also recalled a February statement that discussed this support and also advised customers not to load Google’s apps on new Huawei devices.
With new disabled devices at launch, depleted chips, and older devices with uncertain futures, things just aren’t good at all for Huawei’s smartphones.
