(Reuters) – Google, of Alphabet Inc., warned that if the US administration issued a radical ban on Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, it risked compromising national security, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.
Google's decision comes as the world's two largest economies raise tariffs in a battle against what American officials call China's unfair trade practices.
While the sanctions are expected to hurt Huawei in the short term, industry experts believe that this could force the company, along with other Chinese companies, to become self-sufficient by developing more locally developed technologies, which would undermine to the dominance of US companies such as Google in the long run.
Google is particularly worried about not being able to update its Android operating system on Huawei smartphones, which would encourage the Chinese company to develop its own version of the software, FT reported, citing people informed of the lobbying activities of the company. Google.
The search giant has explained that a version of Android modified by Huawei would be more likely to be hacked, the newspaper said.
In May, the US administration added Huawei to a blacklist of exchanges. This decision put Huawei and 68 subsidiaries in more than two dozen countries on Commerce's list of entities.
Google and the US Department of Commerce were not immediately available to comment on the report.
