The announcement of Samsung Galaxy Fold has not been made a week ago and we already have a thinner competitor, who has a bigger screen and folds flatter. Say hello to the Huawei Mate X. Launching this moment at the MWC 2019, the Mate X features an 8-inch wraparound OLED screen, a folded thickness of only 11mm and a formidable spec sheet highlighted by 5G, a 4,500 mAh battery. and the Huawei Kirin 980 internal processor.
The only OLED display on the Mate X actually serves three functions. When the device is folded, you basically have a dual-screen smartphone, the second screen on the back allowing you to make selfies with the main device or to share what's on your main screen with someone from the other side. Open the Mate X and you will get an almost square (but not quite) tablet with minimal edges on three sides.
One of the sides is reserved for a thicker grip section containing all three cameras, with their accompanying flash and a push-button latch that keeps the tablet folded in the closed position. This approach reduces the thickness of the main chassis to an impressive 5.4 mm thickness. Even when it is folded, the Mate X is only 11 mm thick, largely thanks to the fact that there is no crack in its crease. This is the inherent advantage of folding a screen on the outside rather than the inside: you do not have to worry about crumpling the beautiful screen.

In functional terms, here are all the screens you get with this tablet:
- Main display of 6.6 inches (19.5: 9 format, resolution 2480 x 1148), once folded.
- Rear 6.4 inch screen (25: 9, 2480 x 892), when folded.
- 8-inch main screen (8: 7.1, 2480 x 2200), once unfolded.
If, like me, you wonder why Huawei could not make this hybrid phone tablet-phone even wider in order to offer a perfectly square screen to the full opening, I still have no good answer to that . In fact, as shown by the current trend for foldable devices, the Huawei Mate X is not yet known. Is the Mate X camera system comparable to the one Huawei has integrated into the Mate 20 Pro smartphone? It bears the same brand Leica, but we do not know its specifications yet. Clement Wong, Global Marketing Manager at Huawei, told me today that Mate X's camera would be "tied" with the performance of Mate 20 Pro. It's not exactly the same, but it will still have three lenses that cover different zoom levels.
Here are the features we know: the processor at the heart of the Mate X is the Huawei Kirin 980, identical to the Mate 20 Pro and Honor View 20 that I recently reviewed, phones superbly fast and responsive. Huawei's Balong 5000 5G modem is also associated with this chip, which allows 7nm chips to be paired with as much performance as early in 2019. 5G is not yet an enthusiastic thing from anyone, but its inclusion underscores Mate X's positioning as a device of the future. It has a dual SIM card slot or you can add one of Huawei's nano memory cards.
Huawei's new device contains an impressive 4,500 mAh battery, but we do not know so far. It comes with an upgraded version of Huawei SuperCharge 55W, which will complete the Mate X 85% in 30 minutes. The power key located on the side of the Huawei Mate X also houses a fingerprint sensor.
I've been able to see but not touch – again, it's a theme with foldable devices up to now, do not touch – the Mate X close to the MWC, and the most impressive for me was how the demonstrator handled it casually. He felt no tenderness for his use of the device: he unfolded and folded the Mate X quickly and naturally, and I had no idea of the fragility of the Mate X. ;slate. My main concern with foldable objects is that they will not be perfectly flat when they are really open, but the Mate X resists scrutiny again. Although I can still see small irregularities where the hinge resides, they do not seem to be breakers of agreement.
Huawei proudly marked his hinge by giving him the Falcon Wing design title. The company's engineers have been working there for three years, according to Huawei consumer group leader Richard Yu, and the design has more than 100 components and has been patented. Unfortunately, I could not see a headphone jack on the Mate X, an omission it shares with the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
Huawei offers the Mate X at € 2,299 with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, and publishes it from the middle of this year.
