Hugh Grant reveals he took a hiatus after developing ‘a bad attitude’

He recently returned to television screens with a new role in HBO’s The Undoing.

And Hugh Grant, 60, has revealed why he took a break after developing ‘a bad attitude’.

The British actor admitted he was ’embarrassed’ to start a break from leading roles after his Hollywood offers dried up, saying on Friday he had developed a ‘bad attitude’.

The Four Weddings And A Funeral star told the Los Angeles Times, “I developed a bad attitude from around 2005, shortly after” Music and Lyrics. I’ve just had enough. Then I went back to 2009 and made another movie.

“ At that point, it wasn’t me who was leaving Hollywood. Hollywood abandoned me because I made such a massive turkey with this movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker [Did You Hear About The Morgans?].

“ Whether I like it or not after that, the days when I was a high-paid, top-notch man suddenly vanished overnight. It was a little embarrassing, but it left life free for other things.

Last week, the Notting Hill actor joked that he took on his role in The Undoing because he wanted to ‘get away from [his] exhausting the children ”.

He spoke candidly about fatherhood during an appearance on the Graham Norton Show last Friday, as he joked that his absence made him “ stir up emotion ” for the first time in his career.

Explaining why he originally wanted to take on the role of Jonathan Fraser, he began: “ I did this work in part to get away from my young children as they are exhausting at my age.

“ I thought it would be great to take a break, but every time I got to New York I missed them so much that I was messy, so every scene was suddenly a sign of tears for me. I would even go to a cafe and ask for a cup of coffee and tears would flow!

Explaining how he was often overwhelmed with emotion when away from his little ones, the Paddington 2 actor continued, “ Having spent a career unable to elicit a single emotion, I find that in my old age I cannot not stop them.

“It’s something to do with kids or love, or my wife, or something, but I can’t hold it off.

Hugh and his wife Anna Eberstein’s first child, John, was born in 2012. They have since had a second child in December 2015 and a third in March 2018.

The couple have not disclosed the gender or names of their youngest children.
