The Commander’s Rules Committee has banned Hullbreacher from the Commander format in Magic: the Gathering.
“Hullbreacher has been a problem card since its release [last year], “they said.” Its conspicuous defensive use against the extra card draw has been eclipsed by offensively combining it with mass draw effects to easily strip players’ hands while speeding up the controller. isn’t something we want prevalent in casual play (see Leovold’s ban), and we’ve seen plenty of evidence that it’s too tempting even there, as it combines with wheels and others. popular casual staples.
“The case against the card was overwhelming,” they concluded.
Hullbreacher was released as part of Commander Legends at the end of 2020. Its primary ability prevents other players from drawing more than one card per turn which, when combined with cards like Wheel of Fortune or Timetwister, allows its controller to draw seven new cards while forcing their opponents to discard their hand.
However, Hullbreacher was not the first card to see play in Commander that could be combined with so-called “wheel” effects in this way. While Leovold, Emissary of Trest had already been banned, Notion Thief and Narset, Parter of Veils will remain legal in the future.
“The additional hoops required (an additional color glitch for the Notion Stealer and Sorcery Speed for Narset) appear to keep them at the appropriate play level,” the Rules Committee said, “although we will continue to monitor them. . “
