Hulu brings 4K streaming to Chromecast and Apple TV

Hulu is one of the largest streaming platforms on the market, but lacks the 4K content of its competitors Netflix and Prime Video. This week, Hulu has quietly revealed that 4K streaming is back after its removal, and that it works on Chromecast and Apple TV.

The best gifts for Android users

Confirm it Twitter (via the Edge), Hulu officially returned the opportunity to watch 4K content after its withdrawal last year. Hulu says streamers will need a connection of at least 16 Mbps for UHD streaming, which compares to just 6 Mbps for 1080p content.

Unfortunately, content available in UHD quality is limited to a very small number of emissions. At the moment, it's only Hulu's original shows such as The servant's tale and Runaways, among others, that support 4K playback. This is a short list compared to the competition.

Hulu also supports 4K streaming on only two platforms: Google Chromecast Ultra and Apple TV 4K (5th generation). Hope this will soon open to other platforms such as Roku and Android TV.

While the library of content supported by Hulu and the 4K Ultra HD format continue to grow, it is currently limited to a short list of programs, like all Hulu Originals. HD programming can be viewed on most devices supported with the latest Hulu application. 4K Ultra HD programming is currently available at:

  • Apple TV (5th generation or later)
  • Chromecast Ultra
