by Hulu Animans reboot is already a play for 90s cartoon nostalgia, resurrecting a beloved Clinton-era cartoon for more wacky adventures with the Warner Brothers (and their sister Warner) – not to mention a Accompaniment of equally wacky adventures of evil Pinky mice and the brain. We know some might argue that only the Brain is evil, but Pinky has been around long enough for him to know better now.
Regardless, during the show’s New York Comic-Con panel, Hulu presented a new teaser for the second season of its Animans reboot, and there is… something different about it. It still taps into that retro cartoon nostalgia, but it almost seems like it’s nostalgia for a different cartoon. Like, maybe one that’s not from the 90s at all?
It’s a fun gag, especially since it takes up the entire teaser, but there’s something kinky meta about a retro cartoon that makes a joke on even older cartoons. Animans has never been exclusively on timely pop culture references, because otherwise there would be no reason for so many ’90s kids to know who Orson Welles was, but… yeah. Up to Adam Wingard makes his Thunder Cats movie, that’s all we’re going to get for now.
Animans will return to Hulu on November 5, with all episodes airing at the same time. A press release says it will involve “pop culture parodies, musical performances, historical villain eliminations” and “even some important safety tips.” There will also be more Pinky and the Brain and “Season One favorites” Starbox and Cindy, plus “some rejected. Animans characters that were left on the cutting room floor. We don’t know what that means, but it certainly sounds intriguing. Will these rejected characters be too wacky for television, or will they not be wacky enough?
