Hulu released the first trailer for MODOK, his upcoming animated show which will see Patton Oswalt voicing Marvel’s titular villain in a lighter mind, Robot Chicken– styling echoes the franchise’s usual superhero dramas. The show also has a release date: it will debut May 21 on the streaming service.
MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) is a long-time Marvel Comics villain as the leader of the evil science group AIM. (A more serious take on the character serves as Square Enix’s primary antagonist. Avengers video game, released last year.)
In the new Hulu animated series, MODOK managed to bankrupt AIM, which resulted in the supervillain being fired as head of the organization and left the huge floating head to sort out his work and family issues.
MODOK was originally part of a larger list of Marvel animated shows slated for Hulu in 2019 by the now defunct Marvel TV, alongside Hit-Monkey, Tigra and Dazzler, and Howard the duck series. The four shows were then to intersect in a special called The delinquants (an interpretation of existing cross emissions as Avengers movies or Netflix Defenders for his Marvel heroes).
Those plans would be turned upside down later in 2019, when Marvel TV was shut down, studio director Jeph Loeb (who oversaw the new animated shows) left the company, and Marvel TV’s future efforts were placed under the Marvel Studios division of. Kevin Feige (who has a staggering number of Marvel shows slated for Disney Plus over the next several years). Shows that were already in development under Marvel TV – like the last few seasons of Agents of SHIELD, Hulu’s Helstrom, and MODOK – were allowed to finish their work, but the other shows were summarily canceled.
In this light MODOK isn’t just a wacky take on the Marvel Universe; It’s a final glimpse of a different path that the company’s comic book adaptations might have taken before the MCU fully took charge of the future of Marvel TV shows.
