An Iowa farmer on Thursday found human remains that officials said match the description of a 10-year-old boy who went missing in the area last May.
The remains were located in a field a few miles from Montezuma, where Xavior Harrelson disappeared from the trailer park he and his mother lived in, KCCI-TV reported.
“It appears to be a teenager’s, and at the time,” deputy director of the Iowa Criminal Investigations Division, Mitch Mortvedt, told the news channel.
“The clothes we see on stage, even though they’re obviously soiled and stuff, is what we knew Xavior was last wearing,” Mortvedt said.
Identifying the body could take several weeks, the Des Moines Register reported, citing Mortvedt.
Xavior went missing while cycling near his home on May 27, three days before his 11th birthday.
No suspect or person of interest has been named in the boy’s disappearance.
A former boyfriend of the boy’s mother has come under scrutiny and jailed on a federal weapons charge.
But authorities did not allege the 50-year-old was involved in Xavior’s disappearance.
