Humberto now a hurricane; should bring big swells to Outer Banks

Tropical storm Humberto became a hurricane Sunday night with sustained winds of 75 mph, the National Hurricane Center announced.

Humberto should make a turn east of the Georgia / South Carolina coast and stay off the coast, bringing big waves of surf and light breeze to the outside Banks from mid-week.

A high pressure system from the north and from Humberto in the east will also result in lower temperatures, with peaks in the 1970s, giving us a "first drop index" late this week, according to the weather forecast. Newport / Moorhead City Weather Service.

Some erosion of beaches and mild coastal flooding will be possible for the External Banks due to prolonged north-east wind gusts and strong waves, the meteorological service said.
