Hundreds of ballots for California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recall election, drugs and a loaded gun were found last week in a vehicle where a criminal passed out inside, have the authorities announced Monday.

Police responded to a call from a man who passed out in a vehicle in a 7-Eleven parking lot in Torrance on August 16, the Torrance Police Department said.

During the investigation, officers learned that the suspect was a criminal and had Xanax pills in his possession. Police said further investigation found thousands of couriers, including more than 300 ballots for ailing Gov. Gavin Newsom’s upcoming recall election inside the vehicle.

In addition to mail and ballots, police found a loaded gun, methamphetamine, a scale, and several California driver’s licenses and credit cards in the names of others.

Police said new ballots were being sent to those identified in the investigation and the incident was not related to any additional theft of ballots.

It was not immediately clear how the ballots ended up in the suspect’s vehicle or what he intended to do with them. Police said the incident was being investigated in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit.

The suspect was arrested and faces multiple charges of weapons, narcotics and counterfeiting. His name has not been released.

Newsom’s recall election will take place on September 14. The recall campaign was launched in June last year over allegations the governor mismanaged the state’s response to the pandemic.

The effort increased in November after Newsom appeared to bypass state restrictions on coronaviruses when he was spotted dining at an upscale restaurant without a mask and surrounded by people outside his own home. .
